Tar Heels Beat Boston College 3-1

CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. -- Senior Courtney Johnston cranked 17 kills to propel North Carolina over Boston College (25-20, 23-25, 25-17, 25-16) Friday night at Conte Forum. The Tar Heels won their fourth straight match to improve to 19-6 overall and an ACC-best 10-2 mark.
Two Tar Heels achieved career milestones in digs Friday. Senior Suzanne Haydel surpassed 1,000 career digs, collecting 16 in the win over Boston College to own 1,005 career digs. Haydel added five kills, two blocks and two serve aces in the win.
Junior libero Kaylie Gibson moved into fifth all-time in career digs, after reeling in 25 Friday to total 1,272 in her career. Gibson moved past Katie Galloway (UNC '94) on the Tar Heels all-time list.
"Boston College played a tough match and I am proud of the way our team fought back," said head coach Joe Sagula. "I was very pleased with the efforts of Courtney Johnston, Kayla Berringer and Heather Henry. We got some big-time points when needed tonight."
Cora Harms and Erica Behm combined for 51 assists to fuel the Tar Heel attack. Heather Henry registered 11 kills off the bench and freshman Kayla Berringer notched nine kills. Shelbey Bleke added seven kills and four blocks for Carolina.
Carolina claimed the first frame 25-20 behind a .270 hitting percentage. Bleke, Berringer and Johnston combined for nine kills to zero errors to lead the Tar Heel offense. Haydel added seven digs and Gibson reeled in six as UNC limited Boston College to just a .098 hitting percentage in set one.
The Tar Heels trailed nearly the entire second frame before knotting the match at 18 after a Haydel serve ace. The Eagles answered back to push in front 21-18 before winning the second set 25-23. A .023 hitting percentage recording just 10 kills to nine attack errors plagued Carolina.
The Tar Heels gained their first lead since the beginning of the second set at 13-12 in the third. Carolina finished the frame on a 19-5 run, after once trailing 12-6, to win the third 25-17. Johnston carried the Tar Heels uncorking seven kills while Gibson posted 11 digs to lead UNC. Carolina owned a 2-1 match lead entering the fourth frame.
UNC uncorked a match-best .424 clip in the final frame to win the match 3-1 and set 25-16. Christine Vaughen mashed five kills as the Tar Heels led by as many as eight in the final set. Berringer added three kills at the end to seal the UNC victory.
Carolina returns to action Sunday traveling to Maryland for a 2 p.m. match at Comcast Center Pavilion.
