Tar Heels Shine At Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA - The North Carolina women's 4x100-meter relay squad claimed a third place finish on the fourth day of the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. as the group ran a 44.79 to post a regional mark for the second consecutive day. Action resumes at 7 a.m. Saturday, the final day of the Penn Relays.
Vanneisha Ivy ran the opening leg of the 4x100 for the Tar Heels followed by Malai Walker, Cierra McGee and Tyler Ford as the quartet improved upon their time from Thursday by nearly seven tenths of a second. The group finished third behind Texas A&M (43.10) and Auburn (44.13).
The Tar Heels also posted a top 15 finish in the 4x200-meter relay as the Carolina contingent finished fourth in their heat and 15th overall in a time of 1:36.91.
The men's distance medley relay squad competed in the college division and claimed a seventh place finish with a time of 9:59.26. Kyle Milks started things off for the Tar Heels followed by Brian Barrett, Adam Smith and Adam Cunningham.
The men's 4x400-meter relay group of Kelvin Hardesty, Ryan Booker, Rick Goettel and Charles Cox ran a combined 3:15.59 finishing ninth in their heat and 40th overall on the day.
In one of the final relays of the day the group of Christine Johnson, Cierra McGee, Shaunee Morgan and Dominique Jackson ran the sprint medley relay in 3:58.88 for a 14th place finish.
In the field events, Michelle Newman cleared 38-9 3/4 in the triple jump for an 11th place showing while fellow freshman Kwabena Keene tallied a top throw of 51-11 1/4 for ninth place in the men's shot put.
Patience Coleman cleared 5-7 1/4 in the high jump on Friday as she earned seventh place in the event. Edward Bladwin III hit a top mark of 22-8 1/4 in the long jump for a 15th place finish.
The final day of the Penn Relays is set for Saturday as action gets underway at 7 a.m.
