Tar Heel Women Finish Third, Men Fifth At ACC Outdoors

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Tar Heel track and field teams wrapped up competition Saturday at the 2009 ACC Outdoor Championships in Miami as the women claimed a third place finish, while the Carolina men finished in fifth place after the three-day event. The Tar Heels combined for four ACC individual championships and 23 All-ACC performances.
Dominique Jackson claimed Carolina's lone ACC individual title on Saturday as she posted a time of 2:08.27 in the 800-meter run as she edged out teammate Tasha Stanley who ran a 2:08.49 for second place. Just behind Jackson and Stanley was Callie Pottinger who finished fourth in a time of 2:09.18.
Vanneisha Ivy added to the Tar Heel total in the 200-meter final as she finished sixth overall in 24.15 after posting an All-ACC performance in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.52. Joining Ivy in the scoring column with Ivy in the 100-meter hurdles was LaToya James who finished fourth in 13.76. James tripled up in scoring as she set a new school record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.38 good for second in the event. James would team up with Elizabeth Mott, Callie Pottinger and Tasha Stanley in the 4x400-meter relay as the squad finished second overall earning All-ACC honors.
Also scoring in the 400-meter hurdles was Elizabeth Mott who claimed seventh place in a regional-qualifying time of 59.38. Addie Bracy earned Carolina three points in the 5,000-meter run with a sixth-place showing as she ran a 16:47.92 in the event.
The Tar Heel women relay squads turned in impressive performances on Saturday as in addition to the 4x400-meter relay the 4x100-meter relay team of Malai Walker, Cierra McGee, Shardae Anderson and Tyler Ford ran a 45.21 for third place.
In the field events Michelle Newman claimed All-ACC honors in the triple jump as she cleared 40-7 for third place. Fellow freshman Becky O'Brien narrowly missed All-ACC honors as she finished fourth in the shot put with a top throw of 50-8 3/4. Kimberly Warren added a point to Carolina's total with a throw of 156-3 in the discus for an eighth place finish.
On the men's side, Edward Baldwin III earned a sixth place finish in the 100-meter dash as he ran an identical 10.96 in the finals on Saturday as he ran in the prelims on Friday. Meanwhile, Charles Cox ran a 46.64 in the finals of the 400-meter dash to finish third in the event, while teammate Ryan Booker finished eighth with a time of 48.55.
Adam Cunningham posted a regional mark in the 1,500-meter run as he ran a 3:47.33 narrowly earning the mark en route to an eighth place finish. Brian Barrett improved on his prelim time in the 400-meter hurdles as he finished fifth overall with a time of 52.85 in the final.
The pole vaulting duo of Parker Smith and Scott Houston single-handedly earned the Carolina men 14 points as Smith cleared 17-2 3/4 for second place, while the freshman Houston cleared 16-10 3/4 for third place.
Florida State claimed the women's title with a point total of 160, while Carolina finished third with 123 behind Virginia Tech's 127. The men's title was shared for the first time since 1982 as Virginia and Florida State finished with identical 141 point totals. Carolina finished with 72 team points good for fifth behind Virginia Tech (130) and Georgia Tech (80). Carolina will return to action next weekend when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa. for the prestigious Penn Relays.
Carolina earned a pair of points in the Carlyle Cup competition against Duke as the Tar Heel men and women edged the Blue Devil men and women in both the indoor and outdoor competitions to boost Carolina's lead to 13.5 to 8.5.
