Tar Heels Top Boston College, 12-8, In ACC First Round

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - North Carolina attacker Corey Donohoe made an immediate impact in her first ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship, tallying a hat trick in just the first half to lead the Tar Heels to a 12-8 win over Boston College on Thursday. As the fifth-seed, UNC capitalized on an 8-3 halftime lead en route to securing a first-round victory in the 2008 ACC Championship at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Va., advancing to Friday's semifinal round to face No. 1 seed Maryland.
Donohoe and Erica LaGrow led the Tar Heels with three goals apiece. For UNC, Kelly Taylor dished out three assists, Julia Ryan had a goal and two assists, Kristen Taylor tallied two goals and Megan Bosica had a goal and an assist.
"I was really happy with the way we came out in the first half," said North Carolina head coach Jenny Levy. "I thought that we played sharp and even though we missed a few opportunities, I thought the players made the right decisions. The second half was a little sloppy, but I was overall very pleased with today's game."
Carolina jumped ahead 3-0 in the first five minutes of action, led by a Donohoe goal with 28:45 on the clock, which was assisted by Julia Ryan. Sophomore Jenn Russell and LaGrow followed suit with goals at 26:09 and 25:56, respectively. Russell followed up a Kristen Taylor shot that went wide, while sophomore Bosica assisted Russell for the score. LaGrow's tally followed shortly thereafter.
Junior captain Jenna McCabe put the Eagles on the board at 23:39 with a goal assisted by classmate Lauren Fitzpatrick.
The Tar Heels went on to wrap up the first period with a 5-2 goal differential, consisting of four different UNC scorers. Donohoe added two in the Tar Heel run, while senior Meg Freshwater, Taylor, and LaGrow each posted goals to put UNC ahead 8-3 heading into the break.
Fitzpatrick and junior attacker Maura Mahoney both contributed to Boston College's first half score.
North Carolina carried a 14-9 shot advantage and had nine draw controls to BC's three at the half. Both teams were tied at 10 turnovers apiece before the break.
The momentum of the second stanza seemed to go back and forth between the two league teams. Boston College collected three goals to UNC's two in the first 15 minutes of second half action.
To open the second half, LaGrow notched her fourth hat trick of the season with a goal, assisted by Kelly Taylor, with 27:30 on the clock.
After BC's Jill Rekart had a ground ball pickup, Fitzpatrick found the back of the net for the Eagles at 26:13, while sophomore Lauren Costello earned Boston College's fifth goal in the contest at 19:05.
The Eagles made a late rally, tallying three of the final five goals of the game. McCabe collected two of those goals en route to her hat trick in the contest, while Mahoney added one goal in the second half.
In the cage for the Tar Heels was Amanda Barnes, who made four saves in all 60 minutes of action, while junior goalie Katie Monaghan collected 10 stops against a tough UNC squad.
BC's Monaghan and UNC's Bosica both recorded a game-high three ground balls.
The 2008 ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship will resume action Friday, April 25, as second-seed and host Virginia welcomes Duke, which defeated Virginia Tech in first-round action, at 3:00 p.m. at UVa's Scott Stadium.
