EVANSTON. ILL. -- Northwestern jumped out to a 9-0 lead and defeated North Carolina, 16-3, in collegiate women's lacrosse action from Lakeside Field on Sunday afternoon. The three-time defending NCAA champion Wildcats (15-0 in 2008) have won 36 consecutive games.
Hannah Nielsen led Northwestern with three goals and two assists. Casey Donohoe, the older sister of UNC freshman Corey Donohoe, scored three times and Katrina Dowd had two goals and an assist.
For the Tar Heels, Kristen Taylor tallied two goals and Corey Donohoe scored once while Chelsea Parks had an assist.
The only team to beat Northwestern in over two calendar years was Carolina, which took a 9-8 overtime decision on Feb. 17, 2007, in last season's opener for both teams in Chapel Hill. The Wildcats have won national championships in each of the last three seasons.
Northwestern led 7-0 at halftime and 9-0 before Carolina first scored with 22:24 left in the second half on an unassisted tally by Donohoe that made it 9-1. After the Wildcats countered with a goal to make it 10-1, Kristen Taylor scored off an assist from Parks to cut the lead to 10-2.
Northwestern responded with six unanswered goals to push the lead back to 16-2 and put the game out of reach. Taylor scored her second goal of the game with 37 seconds left to make it 16-3 at the finish.
The Tar Heels complete their 2008 regular season with a record of 11-5. Carolina, the No. 5 seed in next weekend's Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament in Charlottesville, Va., will face No. 4 seed Boston College in first-round action at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The Eagles beat UNC in double overtime, 5-4, on March 29 in Waltham, Mass. The winner of Thursday's game will advance to play top-seeded Maryland on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
