The North Carolina men's golf team fell out of the top three at the conclusion of the second round of the ACC Championship. The team, who finished the first round in third, carded a three-under-par 285 bringing their total score to nine-under-par 567 to tie for fifth with Clemson.
"It's a little disappointing," said Head Coach John Inman after the second round. "We still shot under-par, but we lost ground. We're not far back and we'll just have to come out and have a good round tomorrow. We had it going out there today, were playing solid and then just lost a few shots. We need to come back strong tomorrow."
Carolina claims three of the five players tied in sixth place with a four-under-par 140 total - Reed Darsie, Chase MacFarland and Kevin O'Connell. Darsie, a senior from Chapel Hill, N.C. who had tied for second in the previous round, fired a one-under-par 71 on Sunday. MacFarland, a junior from Savannah, Ga., carded an equal 72 while O'Connell, a freshman from Cary, N.C., carded a two-under-par 70. Senior Barden Berry, of Kinston, N.C., and freshman Henry Zaytoun III, of Raleigh, N.C., each fired an equal 72 in the second round to maintain their position in 37th place. Berry and Zaytoun will enter the third round with a three-over-par 147 total.
Duke leads the eleven teams competing with a 19-under-par 557. One stroke behind the Blue Devils is Florida State with an 18-under-par 558. NC State and Wake Forest are tied for third with an 11-under-par 565, two strokes ahead of fifth-placed North Carolina and Clemson.
Wake Forest's Webb Simpson moved into first place amongst the individuals as his four-under-par 68 brought his total to an eight-under-par 136. Florida State's Matthew Savage finished one stroke behind Simpson with a seven-under-par 137. Duke claims the duo tied in third, Wes Roach and Michael Schachner, who each have a six-under-par 138. Jonas Blixit holds tight at fifth with a five-under par 139, one stroke a head of the five players tied in sixth.
The results of the ACC Championship will count towards the final scores of this year's Carlyle Cup. One point will be awarded to either North Carolina or Duke depending upon the team that finishes the highest. Carolina currently leads 18-6 and has already clinched a win in this year's competition.
For the seventh consecutive year, the ACC Championship is being held at the Old North State Club, which features a par 72, 7,102-yard layout. The second round will resume on Sunday with players beginning to tee off at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
