New London, N.C. - After firing a nine-under-par 279 in the final round, the North Carolina men's golf team moved up two spots to clinch a third-place finish at the ACC Championship with an 18-under-par 846 total. Chase MacFarland, a junior of Savannah, Ga., hit a stride with eight birdies and three bogeys. MacFarland birdied holes 7, 8, 10, 11, 12 and 13 and came out with a five-under-par 67, bringing him to nine-under-par 207. His performance in the final round was enough to move him up four spots into second place.
Head Coach John Inman was pleased with the team's overall performance despite the rainy weather conditions which caused a two-hour delay Sunday afternoon.
"We came out, especially after the rain delay, and played well," said Coach Inman. "Chase [MacFarland] had a great day. He really carried us. He went from one-over to five-under. Henry [Zaytoun III] had a good round too.
They just hung in there when the scores were going low. We didn't come out on top, but I couldn't be prouder of these guys."
Freshman Kevin O'Connell, of Cary, N.C., maintained his sixth-place position after carding a six-under-par 70 on Sunday, bringing him to a six-under-par 210. Tied for 18th was Reed Darsie, a senior from Chapel Hill, N.C., with a three-under-par 213 total. Freshman Henry Zaytoun III, of Raleigh, N.C., fired a three-under-par 69 to finish with an equal 216 and tie for 24th. Barden Berry, a senior from Kinston, N.C., tied for 36th place with a four-over-par 220
Florida State captured its first ACC Men's Golf Championship title with a 26-under-par 838. Three strokes behind the Seminoles was Duke with a 23-under-par 841. Georgia Tech followed the Tar Heels in fourth with a 17-under-par 847 and Wake Forest rounded out the top five with a 16-under-par 848.
Wake Forest's Webb Simpson won the individual title with a 14-under-par 202, a three-round championship record. Tied for third behind MacFarland was Florida State's Jonas Blixit and Matthew Savage with an eight-under-par 208. After finishing the second round tied for 11th, Georgia Tech's Taylor Hall captured a fifth-place finish with a seven-under-par 209 total.
The results of the ACC Championship will count towards the final score of this year's Carlyle Cup. Although Duke will be awarded the point for the Men's Golf ACC Championship, Carolina has already clinched a win in their year's competition with a score of 18-8.
The ACC Championship was held at the Old North State Club for the seventh consecutive year, which features a par 72, 7,102-yard layout. Next up for the Tar Heels is the NCAA Regionals.
