Three Tar Heels Open Outdoor Season With Regional Marks

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Brian Moore along with Vanneisha Ivy and LaToya James all recorded regional qualifying marks on the first day of the Wake Forest Open in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Friday. Moore finished as the top collegiate in the javelin as he recorded a throw of 68.55m (224-11). Ivy and James continued their strong hurdle season as the duo qualified for the 100-meter hurdle final and both recorded regional qualifying times. The Wake Forest Open will conclude on Saturday.
James clocked a 13.69 in the prelims of the 100-meter hurdles en route to qualifying for the final on Saturday. James finished second in qualifying while Ivy finished fifth at 13.89. Also qualifying for the final was senior Porscha Dobson who crossed the line in 14.45.
A trio of Tar Heels competed in the 100-meter dash with Ashley Hill being the top Tar Heel finisher as she finished ninth in a time of 12.27 to qualify for Saturday's final. Erika Foushee finished in a tie for 19th (12.52), while Dejanell Mittman finished 49th (13.55). Mittman also competed in the triple jump and finished in a tie for 16th with a leap of 10.93m (35-10.50).
Christine Johnson and Callie Pottinger finished 2-3 in the 400-meter dash with Johnson barely edging out her teammate. Johnson clocked a time of 55.52, while Pottinger was not far behind at 55.73. Freshman Dominique Jackson finished fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:11.41.
In women's field action, Mary Angell finished second in the shot put with her top throw reaching 14.02m (46-00). Norjai Palma was not far behind Angell as she claimed sixth place with a toss of 13.22m (43-04.50). Palma bested Angell in the hammer throw as she finished 14th (42.29m - 138-09) and Angell took home 32nd (35.82m - 117-06).
On the men's side, Moore was the top Tar Heel on the day as he opened his freshman campaign with a toss of the javelin that traveled 68.55m (224-11) to place him second overall and the top collegiate. Moore's throw ranks as the fifth-best in school history. Also competing in the javelin were Erek Latzka who finished 11th (58.50m - 191-11) and Brian Doran who claimed 21st (51.89m - 170-03).
In other field action, Ian Reynolds took home sixth in the shot put with a throw of 16.06m (52-08.25), while Kyle Goodman finished 21st with a top mark of 13.78m (45-02.50).
On the track, Kelvin Hardesty qualified for the 100-meter dash final as he clocked a time of 10.90 in the prelims. In the 400, Ian Williamson finished 18th (48.81) and Ryan Booker placed 21st (48.90) for the Tar Heels. Andrew Rotz turned in a solid day in the 800 as he placed sixth in a time of 1:53.25. Not far behind Rotz was John Curtiss who finished 12th with a time of 1:54.61. Jamie Reichlin finished 27th on the day as he crossed the line in 1:55.82, just ahead of Adam Cunningham who finished 33rd (1:56.51). Brock Baker claimed a fifth place finish in the 5000 when he crossed the line in 14:44.91.
The Tar Heels will close out the opening weekend of the outdoor season as the Wake Forest Open will end on Saturday
