Three More Regional Marks Set At Wake Forest Open

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The North Carolina track and field team picked up three more regional qualifying marks on Saturday at the Wake Forest Open with Charles Cox finishing third in the 200, freshman Kacey James took second in the javelin and Porscha Dobson joined LaToya James and Vanneisha Ivy with a regional mark in the 100-meter hurdles. The Tar Heels will return to action next weekend when a group will head to the Raleigh Relays and another set of athletes will take part in the Liberty Asics Collegiate Invitational.
Ashley Hill finished eighth in the 100-meter dash final with a time of 12.27 and followed up that performance with a seventh-place finish in the 200 in a time of 24.56. Finishing just ahead of Hill were a duo of Tar Heels, Tyra Johnson finished fourth clocking a time of 24.49 ahead of Shardae Anderson who took home fifth in a time of 24.53.
Dominique Jackson finished 12th in the 1500 clocking a time of 4:42.20. The 3000 was loaded with Tar Heels and Lauren Holesh clocked the fastest time of the group as she finished in 9:55.22 for a second place finish. Courtlin LaReau was not far behind as she finished in 10:17.72 for a fifth place showing. Morgan Stengel was the third Tar Heel in the top 15 when she finished 15th overall in a time of 10:46.85.
In the 100-meter hurdles Vanneisha Ivy finished second, besting her time in the prelims as she crossed the line in 13.63. LaToya James and Porscha Dobson finished 5-6 in the race as James clocked a 13.71 ahead of Dobson's 13.90. All three times were regional qualifying marks.
Colleen Farley finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.23. The Carolina 4x400 women's relay team claimed a second place finish on Saturday as the quartet ran a time of 3:46.75 just behind Hampton's time of 3:46.24. Ashley Hill and Erika Foushee both cleared 17 feet in the long jump with Hill finishing 12th with a mark of 5.40m (17-08.75) and Foushe taking 16th (5.34m - 17-06.25).
Mary Angell opened the discus season with a fourth-place finish as she recorded a throw of 43.64m (143-02). Another freshman javelin thrower recorded a regional throw as Kacey James followed in Brian Moore's footsteps and finished second in the javelin with a throw of 44.40m (145-08). Amanda Nappi fell just shy of the regional mark when she threw the javelin 43.00m (141-01) for fourth place.
On the men's side, Charles Cox opened his outdoor season in style as he tallied a regional mark in the 200 as he clocked a 21.15 which was good for third. John Curtiss, Andrew Rotz and Sam Pompei all competed in the 1500 on Saturday with Curtiss taking 13th (3:59.24), Rotz finishing in 39th (4:06.05) and Pompei coming in 57th (4:10.20). Three more Tar Heels competed in the 3000 with all three claiming top 10 finishes. Ian Bracy finished fifth in with a time of 8:45.12, two spots ahead of Matt Hamrick who finished seventh in a time of 8:49.78 who happened to be two spots ahead of Alex Ray who took ninth (9:00.32).
In the 400-meter hurdles, Brian Barrett finished 11th overall as he crossed the line in 55.73, while the 4x400 relay team claimed a fifth-place finish with a time of 3:14.97. Parker Smith finished in seventh in the pole vault A section as he cleared 4.60m (15-01.00). Freshman Emory Parsons opened his collegiate career with a throw of 47.54m (156-00) which was good for sixth in the discus.
