CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - After closing out the final inning of a 7-2 win in game two of its series at Boston College, No. 2 North Carolina saw eight different players post multi-hit games in a 16-5 victory over the Eagles in the finale of the three-game set Sunday at Shea Field. The Tar Heels (29-5, 11-4 ACC) scored seven runs in the third and added five more in the eighth to sweep the series and move to 6-0 all-time against the BC (9-18-1, 4-11 ACC).
Catcher Tim Federowicz had a game-high three hits and four RBI to extend his career-best hitting streak to 14 games, and utility man Kyle Shelton drove in a career-best three runs on two hits. Left fielder Reid Fronk, who was 2-for-4 with two RBI, doubled and tripled for the second time in the last three games. Seth Williams, who hit his fifth home run to leadoff the second inning, Josh Horton, Kyle Seager, Chad Flack and Tim Fedroff each added two hits on the day.
Dustin Ackley walked three times and singled in the eighth to move his hitting streak to 26 games, which matches Chris Madonna's 1994 streak for the third-longest run in school history.
Right-hander Rob Wooten (1-0) picked up the win with 1 2/3 innings of relief, and closer Andrew Carignan shutdown the Eagles with four innings of scoreless relief. Over the longest outing of his career, the Norwich, Conn., product allowed just one hit and struck out three. He came on with the bases loaded and no outs in the fourth, kept BC off the scoreboard and was not threatened the rest of the way.
Scheduled starter Luke Putkonen was scratched due to illness, and junior right-hander Mike Facchinei got the start but lasted just 1 1/3 innings before Wooten came on in the second.
Boston College starter Terry Doyle (2-2) took the loss after allowing eight runs on seven hits and three walks over just 2 2/3 innings. Reliever Ted Ratliff then went 5 1/3 innings and gave up eight runs on 12 hits. Shortstop Ryan Hutchinson went 2-for-4 with two RBI to pace the Eagles at the plate.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the top of the third, the Tar Heels sent 10 men to the plate and scored seven times in the frame. Shelton had two hits in the inning, a single to start the rally and a double to left center to plate the final two runs. After Shelton's leadoff single, Fronk tripled off the wall in right center to tie the game at two and push his hitting streak to nine games. After back-to-back walks loaded the bases, Federowicz singled up the middle to give UNC its first lead of the day at 4-2. Seager and Fedroff then added RBI singles before Shelton closed the scoring with his two-run double.
Federowicz drove in his third run of the game with a fourth-inning triple to give the Tar Heels a 9-2 advantage, and after Carignan worked out of the bases loaded jam in the bottom of the inning, Carolina added two more in the fifth. Shelton knocked in his third run of the game with a sac fly to left, and Fronk followed with an RBI double for an 11-3 UNC lead.
The Tar Heels added five more runs in the eighth with Federowicz opening the scoring with a single for his fourth RBI of the day. After Flack reached on a fielder's choice to drive in a run, pinch hitter Mike Cavasinni laced a single up the middle to push the lead to 14-3. The final two runs of the inning scored on an error on BC right fielder Rob Anston, who dropped a fly ball off the bat of Shelton.
In the second game of the series that was wrapped up Sunday, freshman right-hander Alex White (4-1) struck out 10 over seven-plus innings to earn his first win since March 10. He scattered six hits and four walks and allowed just one run. White stranded seven BC base runners over his seven innings of work, as he turned a key double play in the fourth and had inning-ending strikeouts with runners on base in the fifth and sixth.
Ackley led the Tar Heels with his fourth career four-hit game and a pair of doubles, while Williams and Federowicz each had two hits in game two. Federowicz led the team with three RBI, two of which came on a two-run double in the seventh.
BC starter Nate Jeans (0-3) allowed five runs on eight hits over 6 2/3 innings to take the game two loss. Designated hitter Tony Sanchez and third baseman Eric Campbell each had two hits to lead the Eagles.
When the game resumed in the top of the ninth, the Tar Heels had the bases loaded with no one out and Benji Johnson at the plate. He quickly gave Carolina a six-run cushion with a sacrifice fly to center, but Ratliff worked out of the inning without any further damage.
Center fielder Peter Frates got that run back for BC with a solo homer in the bottom of the inning, but Wooten came on to get the final three outs of the game, including two via strikeout, to close out the series-clinching victory.
The Tar Heels are back in action against Charlotte at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Boshamer Stadium, followed by a trip to Elon Wednesday at 7 p.m.
