COLLEGE PARK, MD. --- Brie Felnagle won an Atlantic Coast Conference title in the 1,500 meters and followed that with a win in the 800 meters hours later to help power North Carolina Saturday at the ACC Outdoor Championships held at Kehoe Track at Ludwig Field on the University of Maryland campus. Felnagle's stellar day aided the UNC women to a 77-point total and a fifth-place finish overall, while the Tar Heel men also finished fifth, accumulating an identical 77-point total.
Given Saturday's results and by virtue of finishing ahead of Duke in the team standings at both the indoor and outdoor ACC Championships, North Carolina earns one point each in both men's and women's track toward the Carlyle Cup, the annual all-sports competition between the two schools. The two points from track tie the overall score at 12.5.
Felnagle's two-win day started in the 1,500 meters, where she crossed the line in 4:22.88 to win by a full two seconds, earning All-ACC honors in the process. Unsatisfied with just one crown on the day, though, Felnagle turned in a 2:04.93 in the 800 to best runner-up Caitlin Bailey from Boston College by nearly three seconds. Georgia Kloss joined Felnagle in picking up All-ACC honors in the 800, finishing just behind Bailey in third with a 2:07.87 time.
But Felnagle and Kloss weren't the only contributors for the UNC women. In the women's 100-meter dash, Tyra Johnson finished fifth to score points for the Tar Heels, clocking an 11.74 - a new personal best. She matched that performance in the women's 200 meters, this time recording a 23.65 time in placing fifth and recording a second personal best on the day. Both times qualified her for the NCAA regionals.
As well, Kelly Fazekas scored points for UNC in the women's shot put, finishing in seventh position with a 49-2 1/2 heave.
The Tar Heels also received key points from their relays. The 4x100-meter relay team of Vanneisha Ivy, Judith Bataille, Shardae Anderson and Johnson posted a season-best and NCAA regional time of 45.51 to pick up fourth-place honors for the Tar Heels. The women's 4x400-meter relay team, composed of La'Shonda Carter, Anderson, Johnson and Kloss, ran a 3:43.50 to come in sixth.
For the UNC men, the day was highlighted by Reggie Berry collecting All-ACC honors in the men's 400-meter hurdles, finishing as the runner-up with a 51.22 time. That time improves upon his NCAA regional qualifying mark from earlier this year.
Also of note for the Tar Heels: Ian Reynolds put up a season-best 54-1 mark in the shot put to place eighth, and Ryan Booker added a seventh-place finish in the 400, turning in a 49.01 performance.
In the 4x400-meter relay, Brycen McCrary, Cody Harper, Berry and Booker posted a 3:13.03 time to help UNC finish fifth. Britt Taylor, Gareth Keah, Antwain Carey and Berry ran a 41.91 in the men's 4x100-meter relay team to place eighth.
Carolina will now turn its focus to the Penn Relays, where it will compete from April 25-27.
