PHILADELPHIA --- The North Carolina women's track team had numerous athletes in action Thursday at the prestigious Penn Relays, receiving a third-place finish from its distance medley relay team and a host of other strong showings to begin competition at the legendary meet.
The DMR team of Laura Cummings, Tyra Johnson, Georgia Kloss and Brie Felnagle crossed the line in 11 minutes, 12.44 seconds in the Distance Medley Championship of America to give UNC a top-three finish in the event, coming in behind teams from Tennessee and Villanova. Three of those women - Johnson, Kloss and Felnagle - ran on North Carolina's national championship-winning DMR team during the indoor season.
In the high jump, Ashley Haislip posted a 5-4 1/2 leap to finish in a tie for fifth. Kimberly Warren joined her in posting a top-five finish for the Tar Heels, placing fourth in the college women's shot put with her 45-11 3/4 effort.
UNC had two women compete in the pole vault. Abby Kimball was the runner up in the college women's pole vault, using an 11-11 3/4 clearance to finish second. In the championship flight, Rhian Jenks cleared 12-5 1/2 for the fifth time this season in placing sixth.
Addie Bracy turned in a career-best in the steeplechase to improve upon her NCAA regional qualifying mark, recording a 10:27.60 to finish eighth.
Additionally, Vanneisha Ivy, Shardae Anderson, Judith Bataille, and Tyra Johnson teamed up in the 4x100-meter relay for a 46.15 clocking, the best in their heat.
Action for North Carolina resumes tomorrow at 10 a.m. with the college men's pole vault, when Daniel Keller will kick things off for the No. 11 UNC men.
