CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 3 North Carolina scored 11 runs in the second inning and then bettered that total with 12 in the third in a 28-3 win over visiting Davidson Wednesday at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels' 28 runs equaled the fifth most in school history and were the most since a 31-15 win at Jacksonville Feb. 20, 1981.
Carolina (23-4) clubbed a season-high six home runs, including two off the bench from Benji Johnson, and pounded out a season-best 26 hits, 12 of which came in the 12-run third. Twelve different Tar Heels hit safely in the game and 10 drove in a run. In addition to Johnson's two homers, Tim Fedroff, Tim Federowicz, Seth Williams and Garrett Gore each went deep.
Josh Horton, Kyle Seager, Fedroff and Federowicz all had three hits on the day, and Federowicz matched a career high with five RBI. Dustin Ackley went 2-for-2 two runs scored and an RBI to extend his current hitting streak to 19 games, while Gore went 2-for-3 with a career-best four RBI and his first career home run to push his hitting streak to nine games.
Seager scored a career-best four runs, while Fedroff's three RBI were a career high. Williams equaled his career best RBI total with four. Additionally, Chad Flack was 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Drew Poulk added two hits off the bench.
Sophomore right-hander Adam Warren (5-0) was the beneficiary of the offensive explosion and claimed his fifth straight midweek victory. He struck out a career-high nine batters over five innings and allowed three runs on six hits and three walks. Warren now leads all Carolina starters with a 1.67 ERA over 27 innings.
Relievers Brian Moran, B.J. Dail, Jared Bard and Brian Farrell each worked a scoreless inning to close out the win. The Tar Heels combined to strikeout a season-high 17 batters in the game.
Davidson (15-12) got two hits each from Matt Webb and Tommy Piacenza and a home run from Gregory Zage. Rob Wilson (1-2) took the loss for the Wildcats after allowing 11 runs on eight hits in two-plus innings.
The Tar Heels got three-run homers from Gore and Williams in the second and one from Federowicz in the third to highlight the 23-run, two-inning span. By the end of the third, all nine UNC starters had scored at least two runs.
Fedroff added a two-run shot in the fourth, his fourth of the season, and Johnson followed with a solo homer in the fifth a two-run blast in the seventh.
The 26-hit attack raised the Tar Heels' season average to .325, led by Ackley's .495 mark and Horton's .400 average.
Carolina is back in action against Wake Forest for a three-game series beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
