WESTMINSTER, Md. - Kelly Renzi scored four goals to lift eighth-ranked North Carolina past Mount St. Mary's 12-5 in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Sunday.
Renzi found the twine once in the first half before adding three markers in the second half, helping the Tar Heels (4-1) to the win in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Christina Juras posted two goals and an assist while Christina Rude also found the twine twice in the winning effort.
Erin LaMotte, the Mount's (0-2) leading scorer in 2004, recorded her second goal of the year while Nicole Di'Angelo, Jen Davison, Jenna Duffy and Casey Paris also posted markers in the loss.
North Carolina grabbed a 5-1 advantage going into the intermission. Juras got the Tar Heels on the scoreboard on a free-position goal to end a scoreless standstill 16:13 into the contest. Stephanie Scurachio connected with Rude open 1:33 later for a 2-0 edge. Renzi found the twine at 20:48 before Nicki Barnes-Wagner capped a 4-0 off an assist for Julia Ryan at 23:32.
LaMotte scored unassisted with 1:02 left in the stanza to trim the deficit to three markers, but Rude answered with a free-position tally 24 seconds later to go into the break with a 5-1 lead.
The Tar Heels started the second half much like the first with three consecutive scores. Julie Gladchuk hooked up with Juras at 33:25 before Juras connected with Scurachio at the 37:06 mark. Renzi found the twine for the second time on the afternoon 2:19 later.
After Duffy cut the deficit to 8-2 with 16:38 left in the game, Erica LaGrow and Renzi posted tallies in the next two minutes and two seconds to grab a 10-2 margin.
Paris and Kristen Tadlock traded goals before the Mountaineers recorded consecutive markers. Davison knocked in a rebound off Di'Angelo's shot attempt and then Di'Angelo streaked down the field to bring the Mount within six goals with 3:56 on the clock.
Renzi capped off her four-goal outburst and the North Carolina offensive attack with a tally at 3:16.
Naomi Campano Radio recorded eight saves while Valerie Brown made her collegiate debut and notched two stops in the loss. Kristen Hordy and Amanda Barnes posted four saves apiece for the Tar Heels.
The game was moved to Scott Bair Stadium on the campus of McDaniel College in Westminster, Md., due to field conditions at Mount St. Mary's.
Carolina returns to action next Saturday at Duke at 1 p.m. in the Tar Heels' ACC opener.
