NORFOLK, VA -- The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team won at Old Dominion, 11-7, on a rain soaked Foreman Field on Tuesday afternoon. Beth Ames scored a career-high five goals for Carolina.
North Carolina improves to 8-5 with the win, snapping a two-game losing streak. The loss drops Old Dominion to 3-9 overall.
The Tar Heels owned a 7-4 advantage at the half. The Lady Monarchs struck first though with Lady Monarch leading scorer Suzanne Wosczyna finding rookie Katie Veneziale less than two minutes into the contest. North Carolina struck back to go up 2-1 in the next two minutes as Beth Ames tallied back-to-back goals. Junior attacker Melody Shotwell tied the score at 2-2 with 25:27 left in the half off a feed from senior Molly Coane, but the Tar Heels would register five of the next six goals to take the lead for good.
Senior Janine Rodriguez rounded out the Lady Monarch scoring in the first half as she cut the Tar Heel lead to 4-3 with 19:05 on the clock. Meanwhile the Tar Heel's Ames would finish the half with four goals and Rachel Szakmary added two.
oth teams registered four goals in half number two. North Carolina stuck first less than a minute into the half on a goal by Lindsay Higgins, while the teams traded goals through the second half's first 18 minutes.
Freshman Caroline Jacobs cut the Tar Heel lead to 9-6 with 12:37 remaining, but goals by North Carolina's Allison Higgins and Ames' fifth and final goal of the afternoon gave the Tar Heels a 11-5 edge with less than 10 minutes remaining. In the closing minutes of the second half, Jacobs and Shotwell helped bring the game to its final margin with Lady Monarch tallies.
In net, the Tar Heel's Katelyn Hoffman recorded eight saves, while Old Dominion keeper Michelle Gannon made seven stops in the loss.
Defensively, Wosczyna and Jacobs scooped up four groundballs, while Wosczyna led the Lady Monarchs with three caused turnovers. For the Tar Heels, Gina Allen recorded four groundballs while Meghan Kelly caused three turnovers.
