Baltimore, Md. -- The No. 11-ranked University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team set a school record for goals in a game as it opened its 2004 season with a 23-5 win at the University of Maryland Baltimore County on Friday afternoon. Twelve different Tar Heels scored and 11 of their scores were assisted goals.
The Tar Heels were led in scoring by senior Beth Ames, who had four goals, while UMBC was led by Kelly Fiorani, who netted two.
The previous UNC record for goals in a game was 22, set on March 25, 1998, vs. Virginia Tech and on May 9, 2002, in an NCAA Tournament win over UMBC.
"It was a good start to our season," head coach Jenny Levy said after the game. "To set a school record for goals and to have so many of those goals be assisted means we played well together as a team. We were able to get playing time for all of our players. Now we need to do it again and play well on Sunday."
UNC freshman Jess Allen opened up the scoring early as she netted an unassisted goal less than two minutes into the game. However, Retriever Jenny Kasper found teammate Lauren Hess at 4:03 to bring UMBC even at 1-1.
Carolina began to pull away as junior Nicki Barnes, sophomore Brooke Dieringer, and Ames scored three consecutive goals within the next six minutes.
Fiorani brought the Retrievers back to within two at 11:24 with an unassisted goal, but the Tar Heels would go on a 12-1 run to end the half, and go into the locker rooms with a 16-3 advantage.
After the break, the story was not much different, with UMBC scoring just twice more. Carolina got seven goals from seven different players in the second half to cruise to the 23-5 victory.
Senior goalkeeper Katelyn Hoffman played the entire first half and made three saves for UNC, while freshman Kristen Hordy came in for the second period to make four saves.
The Tar Heels will play again on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. at George Mason in McLean, Va.
