CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team, ranked No. 10 in the nation in this week's IWLCA national poll, defeated Boston University by a 17-11 score on Sunday afternoon at Frances E. Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill.
Stephanie Scurachio had two goals and four assists in the game for Carolina. Fellow Tar Heel freshman Melissa McCarthy had three goals and an assist. Lynne Quattrone also had three goals for UNC. Lindsay Lewis had four goals for the Terriers.
With the victory, UNC improves to 2-2 this season. BU fell to 1-1 with the loss.
In the first half, Beth Ames, Allison Higgins and Quattrone scored two goals apiece as the Tar Heels took an 8-5 lead into halftime. Ames was returning to action after breaking her nose in practice on Thursday and missing Friday?s loss at Loyola. Carolina?s biggest first-half lead was five at 7-2 at the 15:44 mark. At that point, the Terriers got hot and scored three of the half?s last four goal.s to cut it to 8-5.
U stayed close early in the second half before the Tar Heels began to pull away. Back-to-back free position goals by Nicki Barnes and Melissa McArthy 1:15 apart gave UNC a 12-7 lead with under 20 minutes to play. The teams traded goals the rest of the way, with the Terriers getting no closer than foul goals.
The Tar Heels will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup at Duke.
