CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -North Carolina (8-5) defeated Ball St. (5-5), 12-0 on Monday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. After being swept by Auburn in a disappointing weekend series, the Tar Heels rebounded with a strong all-around performance against the Cardinals. Seven different Carolina players drove in runs and freshman pitcher Adam Kalkhof threw seven shutout innings in the victory.
Kalkhof improved his record to 3-0 on the season by pitching seven innings and giving up just three hits and one walk while striking out ten batters. Ten strikeouts is the most by a Carolina pitcher since Garry Bakker struck out 13 Virginia Cavaliers on March 30, 2002.
Carolina grabbed a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Jeremy Cleveland and Sammy Hewitt drew consecutive walks. Sean Farrell followed with a single down the right field line which brought Cleveland home. Chris Iannetta then drove home Hewitt and Farrell with a two-run single to left but was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double.
After scoring once in the bottom of the second, the Tar Heels put two runs on the board in the third inning. Hewitt again scored on an RBI double by Iannetta who would cross the plate two batters later on a line drive single up the middle by Blair Waggett.
Carolina added to its lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Wes Moyer led off with a pinch hit single and would come around to score on a single by Cleveland, his second hit of the afternoon. Hewitt collected his team leading 16th RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly to right which scored shortstop Chad Prosser. Iannetta drove in Cleveland with a groundout, giving him a career-high four RBIs in the game.
The Tar Heels host Ball State again on Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Liberty Flames then come to Boshamer Stadium for a game against the Heels on Wednesday, also at 2 p.m.
