As a Junior (2002)
Batted .304 in 62 games • Went 5-for-11 with two doubles and three RBIs in the series against California (March 1-3) • Went 3-for-5 and scored a career-high four runs at Old Dominion on March 5 • Went 3-for-4 with three RBIs against Maryland on March 17 • Had five hits in seven at-bats in two games versus Towson (March 26-27) • Went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs against Wake Forest on April 6 • Had a 12-game hitting streak from May 11-June 1 during which he went 20-for-51 (.392) and scored 12 runs • Went 2-for-4 and accounted for the team’s only run with a home run in the season-ending loss to South Carolina on June 2.
As a Sophomore (2001)
Started 54 of the team’s 57 games at shortstop • Had a breakout year at the plate, leading the team with a .357 batting average and ranking third in the conference with a .434 batting average in 24 league games • Ranked second on the team in hits (76), third in runs (47) and third in RBIs (40) • Had an amazing six-game road stretch from April 2-8 where he batted 19-for-26 (.731); knocked in nine runs, scored eight times, walked four times, stole three bases and had a .962 slugging percentage in that stretch • Was 5-for-5 in the first game of the April 2 doubleheader at NC State, becoming the first Tar Heel to have five hits in one game since Feb. 7, 1998; also scored twice, stole two bases and knocked in two runs in that win • Matched that with another 5-for-5 game, which included three doubles and a triple, in the April 8 win at Maryland; also knocked in two runs and scored three times in the series-ending victory over the Terps • Finished the April 2 doubleheader at NCSU with a 2-for-3 performance • Walked once in that game and reached base every plate appearance until his final at bat of the doubleheader • Was 11-for-14 in the three-game series against the Terps (April 6-8); had an RBI double and an RBI single and finished the series-opener 3-for-5; followed that up with a 3-for-4 outing on Saturday, knocking in two runs and scoring twice, before his spectacular 5-for-5 game in Sunday’s win; also scored three times, knocked in two runs and had a stolen base in that game • Doubled and scored UNC’s only run on Feb. 17 versus Auburn at the Coca-Cola Classic • Had his first home run of the season and was 3-for-5 against Coastal Carolina on March 13 • Had another home run three days later and was 2-for-4 in the ACC opener with Wake Forest on March 16; had a two-run homer in the second inning against the Demon Deacons to give Carolina an early 2-1 lead in that game • Stayed hot in the second game of the series (March 17), batting 2-for-5 and scoring one run • Exploded at the plate at the start of the NC State series; saw batting average rise to .397 with 19-for-26 stretch • Scored a team-high four runs as UNC took two of three games from Virginia (April 13-15) • Had three straight two-hit games, starting with the series-finale versus Virgina through the series-opener with Duke (April 20) • Was 2-for-5, including a two-run single in the seventh, to help UNC to a comeback win over the Blue Devils in the series-opener • Finished the season on fire, batting 15-for-38 (.395) with 12 RBIs and nine runs in the final nine games of the season had at least two hits in six of the final nine games, including a 3-for-5 game at Clemson on April 28 • Was 4-for-10 in two ACC Tournament losses.
As a Freshman (2000)
Started 60 of 61 games • Started 39 of the first 46 games at second but shifted to short full-time with 10 games left in the regular-season and played there throughout the postseason • Led all Tar Heel regulars with a .377 batting average in ACC games • Led the team with nine sacrifice bunts • Had seven three-hit games and notched a career-best four hits in four at bats in the series-finale with Virginia (April 23) • After going through a mild slump in March, raised batting average from .292 to .329 in April by batting 24-for-58 (.414) for the month • Knocked in a run, scored twice and batted 2-for-3 in the season-opening win over Central Florida • Was 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in the Game 1 win of the Penn State doubleheader on Feb. 13 • Belted an RBI triple on Feb. 19 at UCLA and batted 2-for-3 in the series finale on Feb. 20 • Was 3-for-4 with a three-run homer in the 8-0 win over Seton Hall • Saw time at both second base and shortstop in the Seton Hall series and helped Carolina turn three of its five double plays in the Feb. 26 win • Broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning with an RBI single to lead the Tar Heels to a 4-3 win over West Virginia on March 4 • Also made the final out of that game on a diving grab at short • Was 7-for-10 (.700) in the Maryland series • Scored six runs against the Terps in the three-game set • Was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored in Saturday’s 13-11 victory • Was 6-for-9 in the Virginia series (April 21-23) • Tied Saturday’s game at 4 with his second home run of the year • Was 4-for-4 in Sunday’s game against the Cavs • Continued stellar hitting in the ACC by batting 6-for-12 (.500) in the Duke series (April 27-29) • Was 3-for-3, including two doubles and a triple, while knocking in a career-best five runs in the 10-6 win in the series finale • Had a three-run homer in the May 3 win over Winthrop • Was sensational in the field in the FSU series, making a host of acrobatic plays from short against the Seminoles • Started all three ACC Tournament games at shortstop and was 4-for-14 (.286) • Was 3-for-6 in the tournament opener against Wake Forest on May 17 • Knocked in five runs and had three hits in four games at the NCAA Regional at Upper Montclair, N.J.
