As a Junior (2002)

Started 54 of the team’s 57 games in left field • Tied for the team lead with 43 walks and improved his batting average from .273 as a freshman to .327 as a sophomore • His 43 walks also ranked in a tie for second place in the ACC • Led the team with 17 doubles, tied for the team-high with three triples and his 66 hits were the third most on the team • Also had three home runs and drove in 36 runs • His .485 slugging percentage was tops on the team and his .438 on-base percentage ranked second among UNC regulars • Started the year with his first of 20 multiple-hit games, batting 2-for-4 with four RBIs in the season-opening win over James Madison on Feb. 10; crushed a three-run homer to left in his second at bat of the year • Knocked in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning in a 7-6, series-opening win over Seton Hall on Feb. 23 • Broke a 9-9 tie in the top of the eighth inning at Coastal Carolina with a two-run single to propel UNC to the 12-9 win over the Chanticleers on March 13 • Was 2-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively, in the first and last games of the Florida State series (March 23-25) • Doubled in the first inning and added two singles to go 3-for-5 with an RBI and one run scored against Elon on March 27 • Had another three-hit game the next day against Winthrop; had two singles and a solo homer to go 3-for-4 • Keyed a 6-3 win over No. 19 ECU with an RBI single and a solo homer in going 2-for-4; his fifth-inning home run was the eventual game-winning run for the Tar Heels • Batted .500 (7-for-14) in the Duke series (April 20-22); opened the series with a career-high four hits, including two doubles, in going 4-for-5; also scored twice and drove in a run in that 10-7 UNC win; had an RBI single in the middle game of the series and finished the three-game set by going 2-for-5 • Opened the Clemson series (April 27-29) with back-to-back 2-for-4 games • Had four two-hit games over the final six games of the season, including a pair of two-hit games in the Georgia Tech series (May 11-13) and a 2-for-4 effort in the season-ending loss to Clemson in the ACC Tournament (May 17). As a Freshman (2000)
Played first base and DH • Ranked third on the team with nine home runs • Knocked in 44 runs, fifth most on the team • Was sensational in three games at UCLA Feb. 18-20 and was named ACC Player of the Week on Feb. 21 • Finished the series 5-for-10 with nine RBIs and two home runs • Helped propel the Tar Heels to an improbable 13-run ninth inning on Feb. 18 in the wild 17-13 comeback win against the Bruins • Entered the game in the sixth inning as a pinch hitter and was 3-for-4 with five RBIs and he scored twice • Singled in the eighth inning and then hit both a two-run home run and a two-run double in the ninth that put UNC ahead for good with its 14th and 15th runs of the game • Hit his second homer of the season, a two-run shot in the sixth, the next day in batting 2-for-4 • Went 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs in the 11-8 win over Western Carolina on March 7 • Was 5-for-12 (.417) in the NC State series, including three home runs, with six RBIs and four runs scored • Sparked Carolina’s seven-run seventh inning on March 24 with a three-run homer and provided the offense in Carolina’s 4-1 win (March 26) over the Wolfpack with two home runs in the game • Trailing 1-0 in the fifth, Farrell hit a solo home run and then added a two-run shot in the seventh to put UNC ahead for good • Was named ACC Player of the Week (March 27) for the second time after that big weekend • Was 3-for-5 (.600), including two doubles and a home run, in the NCAA Tournament (May 27-29) • Made his only start of the season in left field on the final game of the year. Summer 2000: An all-star for the Edenton Steamers • Batted .236 with five home runs and 26 RBIs.
