RALEIGH, N.C. - Freshman Jamie Watson scored the equalizer in the 70th minute of play, and North Carolina and NC State played a pair of scoreless overtime periods, as the Tar Heels (10-1-3, 2-1-1 ACC) and Wolfpack (6-6-1, 2-3-1 ACC) battled to a 1-1 tie Sunday in men's soccer action at Method Road Soccer Stadium.
Despite the tie, Carolina is unbeaten against NC State in the teams' last seven meetings. The Tar Heels, who are also unbeaten at home and at neutral sites, are now 0-1-3 on the road this season.
Watson evened things up at the 69:50 mark when he collected an errant Wolfpack header and put the ball in the net. The score was his fifth of the season, which ranks second on the squad. He also leads the team with five assists and is tied for the top spot with 15 points.
With the game tied at one, both teams had their chances to earn a victory, with UNC's Wes Shull hitting the crossbar in the 77th minute, and the Pack's Santiago Fusilier hitting the post in the 80th minute. In overtime, Carolina outshot NCSU, 5-1, and owned a 24-11 advantage in shots for the match.
After a scoreless first half, NC State got on the board first when senior Chris Gannon headed in his second goal of the season off of a corner kick from sophomore Federico Peria at the 57:14 mark. The assist was Peria's team-leading seventh of the season. The goal was just the second allowed by UNC in its last six outings.
In goal, NC State's Jorge Gonzalez had five saves for the Wolfpack, while the Tar Heels' Ford Williams finished with two stops. Both keepers went all 110 minutes in goal.
In a game that featured eight cautions, including two red cards, NC State collected 30 fouls, while UNC tallied 20.
Carolina returns to action Wednesday at Davidson at 7 p.m.
