The North Carolina gymnastics team defeated William & Mary on Saturday to win its second meet of the season. The Tar Heels, who also beat William & Mary Thursday, Jan. 16, at the George Washington Invitational, scored a 191.950 to earn their 35th all-time victory over the Tribe, who scored a 186.925.
Two of the team's freshman, Mikel Hester and Courtney Bumpers, once again aided UNC's finish by placing highly in their events. Hester scored a personal best of 9.850 on vault to win the event for the second time in only the second meet of her collegiate career.
umpers placed second on vault, balance beam and floor exercise with scores of 9.825, 9.750 and 9.725, respectively. All three marks, along with her winning all-around score of 38.875 are personal bests for the freshman gymnast. On uneven bars, Bumpers' finish of 9.575 was good enough to tie her for fourth place with junior teammate Maddy Curley.
North Carolina dominated the vault competition, earning the top seven spots except for third. Sophomore Olivia Trusty trailed Hester and Bumpers, finishing fourth with a 9.750. Junior Anna Wilson (9.700) and Sophomore Amy Williams (9.675) followed just behind Trusty.
On the uneven bars, four Tar Heel gymnasts clumped together, taking over the second, third and fourth place spots. Senior Fritzie Cathcart led the team with her score of 9.625. Close behind was Wilson with a 9.600 and Bumpers and Curley, who both earned a 9.575.
Wilson claimed the balance beam title by finishing the event with a 9.825, tying her personal best. Senior Natalie Halbach took fifth (9.325) and was followed by Williams and Sophomore Elisabeth Alsop, who tied for sixth (9.250).
North Carolina swept the top three spots on floor exercise with Curley (9.750) finishing first, Bumpers as the runner-up and Alsop (9.675) in the third place position. Wilson and Cathcart both earned a 9.600 to tie for seventh place.
Out of three all-around competitors, Bumpers and Wilson finished first and second. Their scores of 38.875 and 38.725, respectively, cleared the William & Mary gymnast who trailed with a 37.925.
The Tar Heels will next compete when they host their first 2003 home meet at Carmichael Auditorium at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31.
