ALTIMORE (AP) - Theresa Sherry scored five goals and Whitney Miller had four Friday for Princeton, leading the Tigers to a 16-2 victory over North Carolina in the NCAA Division I Women's semi-finals.
The game was interrupted by thunderstorms for approximately 65 minutes midway through the second half. Play was stopped after Sherry's fifth goal with 13:47 remaining. She did not return after the break in play.
The 14-goal margin is the most lopsided loss for the seven year old North Carolina program. It was the second largest margin of victory in a semi-finals, one shot of Maryland's 19-4 win over Loyola in 1994.
Princeton dominated play from the outset. Sherry opened the scoring at 1:23 of the first half, and the Tigers built an 8-0 lead before Carolina's Lindsey Stoner broke up the shutout with a goal at 27:16. Princeton (18-1) outshot the Tar Heels 14-2 over the first 16 minutes, building a 6-0 lead. North Carolina (17-3) had only two shots in the first 14 minutes.
Princeton (18-1) finished the game with a 31-14 shot margin. The Tigers cleared the bench late in the game, begining with a goalie change with 10:40 remaining. Sarah Kolodner face 11 shots, and made five saves before leaving in favor of Meghan McInnes, who had two saves on three shots.
Second seeded Princeton will meet number 6 one seed Georgetown in Sunday's championship game. The Tigers opened the season losing to the Hoyas in overtime. McInness satarted that game, and the next, before giving way to Kolodner.
