
Storey Scores Twice as Tar Heels Shut Down Elon, 4-0

Elon, N.C. - No. 18 North Carolina followed up two first-half goals with two more in the second stanza to defeat Elon 4-0 Wednesday evening in the first-ever men's soccer night game at Rhodes Stadium.
Mike Gell put the Tar Heels (7-3) on the board with an unassisted score in the contest's 29th minute. David Stokes gave North Carolina an eventual 2-0 halftime advantage with a goal in the 39th minute, assisted by Matt Crawford.
The Phoenix (3-7-1) held the Tar Heels in check for almost 50 minutes in front the crowd of 1,141 until Marcus Storey struck twice to decide the game's final margin. Storey sank an unassisted goal in the 86th minute and followed it up with another score in the 88th minute, off of a pass from Tim Merritt.
North Carolina out-shot Elon 20-6, including 13-2 in shots-on-goal. Ford Williams (74:56, one save) and Jay Batt (15:04, one save) shared time defending the Tar Heel net.
Phoenix goalie Kyle Ostendorf played the full 90 minutes, collecting eight saves.
Carolina will return to action on Saturday night with a key Atlantic Coast Conference road game at Maryland.
