Chapel Hill, N.C. - Chris Carrieri scored twice as North Carolina defeated Elon, 5-0, on Wednesday night in collegiate men's soccer action at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels scored four second-half goals to blow open a close game that was 1-0 at halftime.
On the night, Carrieri broke the UNC record for goals scored in a season. He now has 22 goals in 2000, breaking the previous record of 20, set by Derek Missimo in 1989. It was Carrieri's sixth multi-goal game of the season and his fifth in the last six games.
Last Wednesday against Charlotte, Carrieri broke Missimo's school single-season scoring record. The junior forward has 22 goals and 12 assists for 56 points this season. He leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in all three categories.
Caleb Norkus had a goal and two assists for the Tar Heels, while Mike Gell had two assists. C.J. Steffen and Ryan Kneipper also scored one goal apiece, and Danny Jackson, Matt Crawford and Michael Bucy had one assist apiece.
Carrieri and Norkus each scored at least one goal for the ninth consecutive game, setting a new school record. The previous record was set by Todd Haskins in 1993.
With the win, Carolina improves to 15-2 on the year, equalling the most wins the Tar Heels have earned in a season under 12th-year head coach Elmar Bolowich. UNC went 15-6-1 under Bolowich in 1991. The school record for wins in a season is 20, set in the Final Four season of 1987.
Elon falls to 8-9 with the loss.
The Tar Heel defense held Elon to zero shots in the first half and three in the game, earning its eighth shutout of the season. Michael Ueltschey played the first 63 minutes in the net before Brad Thomas entered the game in relief and played the final 27 minutes.
Carolina returns to action on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. for its final regular-season home game against Wake Forest.
