No. 12 Men's Soccer Shuts Down UNC-Greensboro, 3-0

GREENSBORO, N.C. - No. 12 UNC Chapel Hill handed UNCG its first loss by shutout in 43 games Wednesday night, beating the Spartans 3-0 at home in front of 1,727 fans, the largest crowd in two seasons.
UNCG last lost by shutout October 4, 1997 in a 2-0 homecoming loss to Central Florida.
C.J. Steffen scored the game-winner at the 12:52 mark on a rifle from 18 yards that snuck inside the upper right corner. Chris Carrieri scored three-and-one-half minutes later at the 16:26 mark, taking a pass from Michael Bucy, challenging Spartan goalkeeper Nathan Kipp one-on-one and beating him to the short side.
The Tar Heels rounded out the scoring at the 88:08 mark when back Daniel Jackson lofted a direct kick over Kipp's head and into the goal from 25 yards.
UNCG got its best chance at the 24:56 mark when Chris Goos knocked a header off a cross just wide of the right post. Southern Conference Player of the Week Alejandro Moreno did not get off a shot in the game.
UNC Chapel Hill outshot the Spartans 9-3, including a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Kipp made five saves, while Tar Heel goalkeeper Michael Ueltschey made one.
Wednesday's attendance was the largest since the team's loss to Central Florida in 1997, when 2,120 people were at the game.
UNCG falls to 4-4, 1-0 in the SoCon. The Spartans travel to Spartanburg, SC, for a conference game against Wofford September 25 at 7 pm.
UNC Chapel Hill improves to 6-1, 1-0 in the ACC. The Tar Heels travel to Charlottesville, VA, September 25 for a conference matchup with Virginia at 7 pm.
