CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Michael Bucy scored the game-winning goal at the 78:52 mark to lift the University of North Carolina men's soccer team to its first win over Clemson since 1991 Saturday evening at Fetzer Field, 2-1. Carolina had lost seven consecutive games to the Tigers and had not beaten Clemson in 10 tries dating to a 3-1 Tar Heel victory in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament in the 1991 season.
With the win, Carolina improves to 3-1 on the season, 1-0 in the ACC. Clemson falls to 1-3, 0-1.
Bucy scored the game-winner on a header at the 78:52 mark. Tar Heel senior tri-captain Joey DiSalvo got an assist on the goal with a throw-in from the left sideline that fellow tri-captain Matt Laycock flicked with his head to Bucy, who was off-balance but able to re-direct the ball into the left side of the net.
Clemson had taken a 1-0 lead at the 40:52 mark on a goal by Alan Woods. Woods got beyond the Tar Heel defense and took advantage of assists from Ross Goodacre and Pablo Tambosi to deposit the ball in the left corner of the net.
The Tigers controlled the momentum of the match for most of the early portion of the first half, but Carolina scored two goals in less than 10 minutes to seize the victory. Freshman Ryan Kneipper scored his first career goal to tie the game at 1-1. Kneipper took a long forward pass from Eddie Robinson and poked it past Tiger keeper Josh Campbell. Bucy's goal came almost exactly eight minutes later.
Clemson out-shot Carolina, 8-7, on the night. UNC's Michael Ueltschey played very well in the goal, however, recording three saves and directing traffic in the rear of the Carolina defense.
Carolina returns to action Friday night when it hosts the Nike Carolina Classic at Fetzer Field. UNC Greensboro will play Alabama-Birmingham in the first game at 5:00 p.m. Carolina will play Lehigh in the second game at 7:30 p.m.
