
Tar Heels Down Lehigh 3-1 In Nike Carolina Classic

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina led, 2-0, after eight minutes of action and cruised to a 3-1 victory over Lehigh Saturday afternoon in the Nike Carolina Classic. With the win, Carolina improved to 4-1 on the season. Lehigh fell to 3-1-1. UNC led, 3-0, until the Mountain Hawks scored a late goal at the 80:01 mark to end Carolina goalkeeper Michael Ueltschey's bid at a shutout. The Tar Heels improved to 4-0 this season in games started by Ueltschey in goal.
Carolina took a 1-0 lead at the 3:44 mark when Lehigh's Colin Marshall headed a UNC cross into the net, recording an own goal for the Tar Heels. Four minutes later, Caleb Norkus stole the ball in the midfield and fought his way through several Lehigh defenders and scored unassisted from the top of the box at the 8:02 mark.
Carolina's Chris Carrieri, the fourth-leading scorer in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season, scored off a beautiful flick pass from Noz Yamauchi for a 3-0 lead at the 66:00 mark. C.J. Steffen also assisted on the goal.
Lehigh scored its lone goal of the game with under 10 minutes to play when Kevin Jackson took advantage of a miscommunication in the Carolina defense to score on an empty net.
In the afternoon's first game, Alabama-Birmingham defeated UNC Greensboro, 2-1.
The Nike Carolina Classic will conclude Sunday, with Lehigh playing UNC Greensboro at 1:00 p.m. and North Carolina facing Alabama-Birmingham at 3:30 p.m.
