CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina Gymnastics team ended its home season with a bang, destroying three previous team records and defeating Towson and Rhode Island. The Tar Heels finished with a record-setting 195.050 final team score, more than enough to top Towson's 192.625 and Rhode Island's 190.650.
Carolina set a new team high mark on the vault, finishing with a 48.975, which surpasses the old 1998 record of 48.850. Senior Jennifer DeLuca led the way for the Heels, winning the event with a 9.875. Sophomore Brooke Wilson added a 9.800, good for second place. Rounding out the record setting vault team was senior Ashley Simpson (9.725), junior Julie Pasqualini (9.75), senior Joni Smith (9.80), and freshman Monica Middleton (9.80).
The Tar Heels claimed yet another team record in the senior's final meet at Carmichael Auditorium. The balance beam squad made up of seniors Shelley Austin and Nicole Austin, junior Erica Roberts, sophomore BrookeWilson and freshmen Lisa Companioni and Monica Middleton finished with a 48.950, eclipsing the old record of 48.800 set in 1997. Wilson took first on the event finishing with a 9.900. That mark was yet another school record, as Wilson surpassed the former individual beam record of 9.875 set in 1995.
Wilson also set a new individual school all-around record and claimed first in the all-around with a score of 39.200. That mark beats the Wilson's previous record of 39.175 she set earlier this season against Auburn. The victory is also Wilson's eighth all-around crown of the season.
Other strong performances were turned in by Roberts, who had a personal best 9.850 and claimed second on the beam, and by Pasqualini who finished second on floor with a 9.825. Middleton finished sixth in the all-around with a 37.600 total.
Towson gymnasts Niina Parjanen (38.975), Liane Williams (38.925) and Kim Yenco (38.175) took home second through fourth place in the all-around. Williams finished with a 9.875 on the floor and a 9.800 on the beam. Rhode Island had a solid performance turned in by Cristina Marsicovete who finished with a 9.625 on the floor.
