CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Taylor Twellman's unassisted goal at the 17:33 mark was the game's only score as No. 11 Maryland defeated No. 23 North Carolina, 1-0, Saturday night in collegiate men's soccer action at Fetzer Field. With the win, Maryland improves to 8-3 on the season, 3-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Carolina falls to 7-4, 1-3.
The Tar Heels had plenty of scoring chances and actually outshot the Terrapins, 13-9, but could not capitalize and lost their third consecutive ACC match by one goal.
Twellman's goal came when he captured a loose ball near the top of the Carolina box and drilled a rocket into the upper right corner of the net where UNC goalkeeper Brad Thomas had no chance to make the save. Thomas made his first career start against an ACC foe and played very well, recording three saves and directing a solid Carolina defensive effort.
Tar Heel leading scorer Chris Carrieri had a golden opportunity to tie the score at 1-1 at the 22:15 mark, but his shot richocheted off the crossbar and over the net. Ten minutes later, Caleb Norkus also had a chance to tie the score, but his shot from the left of the box was just right of the goal.
Carolina had several chances in the second half as well, including a flurry of three shots in rapid succession 10 minutes into the second half, but Terp goalie Christian Lewis saved Carrieri and Norkus- shots and Matt Crawford-s attempt was wide left of the goal.
Carrieri led UNC with five shots. Twellman and Nick Downing each tallied two shots for Maryland.
Carolina returns to action Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. when it hosts Radford at Fetzer Field.
