DAVIDSON, N.C. - North Carolina's Eddie Robinson scored the game-winning goal with just 36 seconds remaining in the game to lift the Tar Heels to a thrilling, 3-2 victory at Davidson Sunday afternoon.
Davidson got on the board first off a corner kick. Sophomore Jon Tetirick played the ball from the left corner to sophomore Jeremy Kilburn. Kilburn flicked the ball towards the goal where sophomore Chris Norbet deflected the ball past the diving UNC goalie.
Although the Wildcats kept the ball in the North Carolina end of the field for much of the first half, they only got off five shots. At half time, Davidson held a 1-0 lead over the Tar Heels.
UNC came out ready to play in the second half. Midfielder Michael Bucy took a Joey DiSalvo pass and slid the ball past an extended Soren Johnson to tie the game.
Just 43 seconds later, the Carolina offense had a flurry of action in front of the Wildcat goal that resulted in a DiSalvo goal giving the Tar Heels a 2-1 lead.
For most of the next 39 minutes of action the Wildcats were on the defensive with UNC continuing to use the long ball to their advantage, but not converting its scoring chances. However, after a foul near midfield, Wildcat junior Andy Murray sent a free kick into the box which found senior Lawrence Cann and then the back of the net to tie the score, 2-2.
After the restart Carolina regrouped and went on the attack. UNC's Robinson knocked in the winning goal after a flurry of activity in front of the net resulted in a loose ball situation. The Tar Heels were able to run out the final 36 seconds on the clock and preserve the 3-2 victory.
Carolina improves its 1999 record to 8-4 overall. Davidson falls to 7-8.
Carolina returns home to host UNC Asheville at 7:00 Wednesday night at Fetzer Field.
