CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Caleb Norkus scored three second-half goals and Chris Carrieri scored twice and added two assists as the University of North Carolina men's soccer team defeated Winthrop, 9-1, Wednesday evening at Fetzer Field. Carolina led, 3-0, at halftime and exploded for six second-half goals in the win. The nine goals and the eight-goal margin of victory marked the most goals scored by the Tar Heels and UNC's largest margin of victory since a 12-0 win over Barton during the 1987 season.
The hat trick was the first of Norkus' career. He scored three goals in a 15-minute span of the second half to blow the game open for UNC. Carrieri scored the first goal of the game at the 13:30 mark and added a second goal at 66:58.
Freshman Matt Crawford, playing despite a broken toe suffered in last Saturday's loss to Duke, assisted on Carrieri's first goal and scored the first goal of his collegiate career. Other strong individual performances for the Tar Heels included Matt Laycock's goal and assist, Jon Wean's goal and assist and Noz Yamauchi's two assists. Wean's three points scored were the first goal and assist of his two-year college career. Junior Brad Thomas made the second start of his Carolina career and wen the distance in the goal for UNC.
Darryl Gomez scored the Eagles' only goal of the game at the 73:11 to cut the Tar Heel lead to 8-1.
With the win, Carolina improves to 7-4 on the season. Winthrop falls to 3-7. Carolina returns to action Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. when it hosts Atlantic Coast Conference rival and national power Maryland at Fetzer Field.
