Nathan Miller joined the University of North Carolina athletic training staff in August of 2022. He is the staff athletic trainer for the men’s lacrosse team.
During his time here at UNC, Miller has added multiple certifications to his repertoire. He has earned his certifications in both Mental Health First Aid as well as becoming a QPR Gatekeeper Instructor. His mental health certifications allow him to assist and instruct student-athletes and the athletic department staff in QPR suicide prevention training. Miller also practices dry needling after completing a range in dry needling methodologies in his trainings.
Outside of his therapeutic toolbox, Miller works closely with the UNC Exercise and Sports Science department and movement lab to implement a more detailed screening process to drive intervention and prevention plans for his men’s lacrosse student-athletes. His work with the movement lab adds to the passion he has in utilizing wearable technology and GPS data to help guide student-athletes’ activity levels during transition periods for injury prevention.
Miller’s previous work with men’s lacrosse sparked his interest in immediate and emergency care. This interest is utilized with him sitting on the Emergency Medical Committee at UNC where he assists in reviewing emergency policies and procedures, evaluate emergency equipment its maintenance, and emergency incident review.
Miller is a graduate of Central Michigan University in 2015, where he earned a B.S. in Athletic Training.
In his last semester before graduation, Miller worked for Saint Joseph’s University as an athletic training intern in the fall of 2015 before joining the staff full-time as assistant athletic trainer in the spring of 2016. During his six years at SJU he mainly worked with the men’s lacrosse and field hockey programs. While at SJU Miller then went on to obtain his M.S. in Sport Management focusing in Intercollegiate Athletic Administration in 2019 from California University of Pennsylvania.
Before coming to Chapel Hill, Miller spent the previous year at the University of Louisville working with the field hockey program.
Miller has been NATABOC Certified Athletic Trainer since 2016.
Miller is a native of Michigan and currently resides in Chapel Hill with his dog Poppy.
