Andy Matthews, 5-10, 165 pounds
Breschi on Matthews: Plays the role of the field general from the attack standpoint on the offensive end…sees the field well…had a great fall…had multiple assists in both scrimmages…we anticipate in his growth that he will be turning the corner more and become more of a threat to score.
2018 (Junior): Started all 14 games on attack…ranked second on the team in points with 34…had eight goals and a team-leading 26 assists…had 16 more assists than any other player on the team…led the attack unity with 28 ground balls and five caused turnovers…scored on 47.1 percent of his shots…opened the season with multiple points in first four games…had two assists and two ground balls versus Lafayette, two assists and three ground balls versus Furman, a season-high five points versus Furman on two goals and three assists and a goal, two assists and three ground balls in win at Johns Hopkins…consistently put up assists throughout the season…had two versus St. John’s and three assists on the six goals versus Denver…against Richmond he had a goal, two assists and a season-high five ground balls…had a pair of assists against Maryland, a goal and two assists as well as three ground balls versus Duke, a goal and three ground balls against Virginia and a goal and two assists against Syracuse…had great game in season finale in 10-9 win over Notre Dame…had a goal, three assists, two ground balls and a caused turnover against the Fighting Irish.
2017 (Sophomore): Led the Tar Heels in assists with 27, almost double the total of any other teammate…tallied 12 goals and was third on the team in points with 39…had 23 ground balls…started all 16 games on ACC championship squad…recorded assists in 14 of 16 games, including in the last nine games of the season…had a point in each of the last 12 games of the season…had multiple assists in seven games…had two assists against both UMBC and Furman and a career-high four in win over Lehigh…after being held scoreless against Johns Hopkins, he had three assists in win at Denver…recorded two goals and added two assists versus Hofstra and had three goals and two assists against Dartmouth…in the ACC Tournament, he recorded a goal and three assists in wins over both Syracuse and Notre Dame…had a trio of games with three ground balls…tapped for the prestigious All-ACC Academic Men’s Lacrosse Team…five Tar Heels were named to that team and he was the only non-senior so honored…named to 2016-17 ACC Academic Honor Roll…named to the All-Tournament Team as Carolina captured the ACC championship.
2016 (Freshman): Played in three games as a freshman...scored the first goal of his career at Manhattan...also had a ground ball in that game...also played against Furman and Richmond on a team which won national title.
High School: A graduate of Gilman School where he was coached by his uncle, Brooks Matthews, a 1991 UNC alumnus...U.S. Lacrosse first-team All-America and USA Today lacrosse All-America...first-team All-MIAA in lacrosse on two occasions...also first-team All-MIAA in soccer...his Gilman lax team reached a national ranking as high as #3 in his time there...two-time Under Armour underclassman champion with a 12-0 record...put in more than 50 hours of community service at Living Classrooms...graduated with a 3.8 GPA…played for Maryland Lacrosse Club where he was coached by his father Mickey.
