August 18, 2026 | Men's Golf
North Carolina's Niall Sheils Donegan will represent Team Great Britain & Ireland for the second straight year in the Walker Cup, a Ryder-Cup style amateur event against the United States that will take place at Lahinch in County Clare, Republic of Ireland, on September 5-6.
Â
He is one of six individuals on the 10-player squad that also competed last year for GB&I at Cypress Point Golf Club in Pebble Beach, Calif., where he won two of his matches.
Â
Sheils Donegan is a native of Scotland, but moved to Mill Valley, Calif., as a child. He earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference and second-team All-America honors for the Tar Heels in 2026. His stroke average of 69.91 led the team and was the fourth-best in UNC single-season history.
Sheils Donegan is the ninth Tar Heel to play in the Walker Cup joining Harvie Ward (1953, 1955, 1959), Marty West (1973, 1979), Frank Fuhrer (1981), Davis Love III (1985), Tom Scherrer (1991), David Ford (2023), Austin Greaser (2023) and Dylan Menante (2023).
Â
The GBI& team is captained by Dean Robertson and includes Sheils Donegan, England's Eliot Baker, Ben Bolton, Sam Easterbrook, Josh Hill, Luke Poulter, Tyler Weaver, 2026 U.S. Amateur champion Jack Whaley, Ireland's Stuart Grehan and Scotland's Connor Graham.
Â
GB&I hopes to break the United States' four-match winning streak, including a 17-9 margin at Cypress Point. GB&I most recently won the Walker Cup in 2015 at Royal Lytham & St Annes.
