Diamond Heels Stroll To Seven-Inning Win Over Duke, 13-0
May 3, 2026 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Six runs in the first inning set the tone as Carolina baseball ran away with a 13-0 victory in a non-conference crosstown showdown with Duke on Sunday afternoon in Boshamer Stadium.
Â
The No. 2 Tar Heels (37-9-1, 17-7 ACC) picked up where they left off against the Blue Devils last Sunday, scoring in nine straight innings between the two games. UNC improved to 3-1 in 2026 against Duke, efficiently claiming the season series in a year where the two played four regular season contests for the first time since 1952.
Â
There was no waiting around to take control of this game from Carolina, who scored six runs with four hits, two stolen bases, three walks, a HBP, and a sac fly. For a team that is now 21-2 when scoring in the first inning and 31-2 when scoring first, the quick attack is an effective game plan.
Â
Carolina kept the foot on the gas, putting up in the next three frames to put the game into run-rule territory. It wound up as the 12th run-rule of the year, adding on to what was already a program record high in one season.
Â
Macon Winslow, the former Blue Devil, was the star at the plate with a final stat line of 3-for-4 with a career-high five RBIs and three runs scored. His second inning home run was the highlight, taking his former teammate Marcello Mastroianni 416 feet off the photo tower in center field.
Â
Winslow played the role of designated hitter on Sunday, giving his catching partner Colin Hynek the chance to handle the duties behind the dish. Hynek had a big impact on the game both at the plate and in manning the base paths.
Â
In the top of the first, he threw out Duke's leadoff man Jake Lambdin trying to steal second. In four games against the nation's No. 4 team in stolen bases, Hynek and Winslow allowed just two and caught three stealing.
Â
Hynek followed that up with a sixth inning, RBI triple that put the final cherry on top of a great day offensively for the Tar Heels. The Georgia State transfer had no triples in his career coming into this season and now has three.
Â
With a weekend off due to finals, the heavy artillery took the mound for Carolina on Sunday as head coach Scott Forbes deployed Jason DeCaro, Ryan Lynch, and Caden Glauber to earn the team's third shutout of the year. The trio combined for 10 punchouts and gave up just three hits and two walks.
Â
DeCaro accounted for four of those strikeouts with the second being the most significant, helping him surpass 200 in his career. He now sits just two shy of passing Austin Bergner at 206 who was the most recent Tar Heel surpass the milestone back in 2019.
Â
The Tar Heels return to a more regular schedule next week with a Wednesday night matchup against Winthrop in Boshamer Stadium. ACCNX will host the coverage scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
