Winslow & Matthijs Round Out 2026 MLB Draft For Carolina
July 12, 2026 | Baseball
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The second day of the 2026 MLB Draft saw Carolina baseball's Macon Winslow and Matthew Matthijs selected to round out a six-person draft class for the Tar Heels.
Â
The junior catcher Winslow was a sixth-round pick by the Philadelphia Phillies while senior captain Matthijs was picked up by the Seattle Mariners in the 17th round. Six draftees ties 2024's class for the most under head coach Scott Forbes.
Â
The five taken in the first six rounds are the most for the program since the 2009 class that featured Dustin Ackley, Alex White, and Kyle Seager.
Â
Winslow was a stalwart of the Carolina lineup after jumping over from crosstown rivals Duke, making 67 starts while setting new career bests in batting average (.282), home runs (10), and RBI (57) among others. He also played a huge part in keeping the base paths clean, allowing just 10 stolen bases all season with eight caught as the Heels recorded the fewest stolen bases in the ACC.
Â
Matthijs heads to Seattle after a decorated four-year career in Chapel Hill. An All-American and a Dick Howser Trophy semifinalist as a sophomore, he made 103 career appearances with a 4.48 ERA, a 16-6 record, and 153 strikeouts.
Â
The duo, paired with the four Heels taken on day one, give Forbes 27 draftees as a head coach.
