Pitching And Homers Power Tar Heels To 4-1 Win In Series Opener Against Pitt
May 8, 2026 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina baseball followed their usual formula of elite pitching paired with timely hitting to take a 4-1 victory in game one against Pitt on Friday night in Boshamer Stadium.
Â
The No. 2 Tar Heels (38-9-1, 18-7 ACC) rode dominant performances on the mound from Jason DeCaro and Caden Glauber, who combined to strike out 12 Panthers and allow just five hits and no runs. The 8.2 scoreless innings from the duo put them both below 2.00 in ERA on the year.
Â
Coming into the weekend, only 10 qualified pitchers in the country sat below the 2.00 ERA threshold. Carolina is the only team that can boast two.
Â
DeCaro picked up the win to improve to 9-2 on the year with seven punchouts and just four hits in his 5.0 frames. At one point across the second and third innings, the junior righty struck out five Panthers in a row. Across his last four outings, he has only surrendered one earned run and has struck out 27% of batters faced.
Â
Glauber entered the game with the bases loaded and only one out, immediately inducing a double play ball to get the Heels out of a jam. If the season ended today, his 1.95 ERA would be the best for a Carolina freshman since Trent Thornton's 1.37 mark in 2013.
Â
The highlights of the UNC offense came from a trio of solo shots early in the contest from Gavin Gallaher, Macon Winslow, and Cooper Nicholson. All three sent out to left field gave the Heels their first multi-home run game since sending three out in back-to-back contests against Georgia Tech.
Â
Gallaher and Winslow left the yard in the first and second innings respectively, both now up to nine on the year. This is typically the time of year that things start clicking for Gallaher, who is now hitting .369 in the month of May in his career.
Â
Nicholson's bomb extends his team lead out to a dozen on the season. 11 of the 12 have wound up over the left field fence, but this was just his fourth against a lefty arm.
Â
The Tar Heels quickly return to Boshamer Stadium tomorrow for a high noon square off in game two of the series against Pitt. Coverage will once again be on ACCNX.
