Heels Drop Series Opener To Boston College, 6-1
April 2, 2026 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Carolina baseball never quite got their offense going, losing the series opening contest to Boston College 6-1 on Thursday night in Boshamer Stadium.
Â
The No. 6 Tar Heels (25-5-1, 9-4 ACC) snapped the six game win streak they had built coming into the game, as they failed to string together timely hitting against effective pitching from the Eagles. Nine hits overall was far from the fewest on the season for UNC, but 0-5 with runners in scoring position kept them from establishing any sort of momentum.
Â
Sophomore Ryan Lynch got the start for the Heels and recorded six hits, three runs, and four strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Head coach Scott Forbes made the decision to bump him up two days from his normal Saturday rotation with Jason DeCaro under the weather and requiring more rest.
Â
Fellow classmate Walker McDuffie relieved Lynch and was solid to keep the Heels within striking distance. His line finished at 2.0 IP, two hits, one run, and one walk. Matthew Matthijs had one of the most efficient outings of his career, throwing three total pitches to get a double play and get his team out of the eighth.
Â
The lone spark of offense for Carolina came from a good piece of small ball in the bottom of the second. Forbes simultaneously put the bunt on for Tyler Howe while sending Owen Hull on a steal from second to third. The third baseman crashed to defend the bunt and could not recover in time to prevent a steal from Hull and the throw down wound up in left field, allowing Hull to make it home.
Â
The Tar Heels will have two more opportunities on the weekend to level the score with the Eagles. The first of those comes on Friday afternoon with first pitch set for 5 p.m. ET.
