Women’s Tennis Set For Pair Of Road Matches

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 5 University of North Carolina women's tennis returns to action for a pair of road matches in Virginia this weekend. The Tar Heels will visit Virginia Tech on Friday at 3 p.m. before clashing with no. 13 Virginia Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville.
UNC will face Virginia Tech for the first time this season. The Tar Heels and Hokies last played in 2024 where Carolina earned a 4-0 sweep. Overall, Carolina is 21-0 against Virginia Tech.
Carolina will meet Virginia for the second time this season, but the first in ACC play. Both teams head into the weekend undefeated in league action. The Tar Heels hosted the Cavaliers earlier this season for their first ranked matchup of the year where they rolled past Virginia, 6-1. Last time UNC faced Virginia on the road was in the 2025 season. The Tar Heels fell in a tightly contested battle, 4-3.

- Reese Brantmeier was named ACC Player of the Week for the second consecutive week (Feb. 3) after having another standout weekend for the Tar Heels going 2-0 in singles and 1-1 in doubles while helping lead the team to two top-10 wins. Both of Brantmeier's singles wins clinched the team win for Carolina against no. 9 NC State and no. 1 Georgia.
- Reese Brantmeier and doubles partner Alanis Hamilton were tabbed ACC Doubles Team of the Week on Jan. 27 after topping two ranked opponents from Virginia and Charlotte. The duo has gone 5-1 to start the season.
- Oby Kajuru was tabbed ACC Player of the Week on Jan. 20 for the first time since she joined the program. No. 23 Oby Kajuru defeated no. 5 Savannah Dada-Mascoll from App State for the first ranked singles win among the Tar Heels this season. The win helped the graduate earn the weekly honor from the league.
- The Tar Heels downed no. 14 Virginia, 6-1, for their first ranked win of the 2026 campaign.
- With the team's win over App State, head coach Brian Kalbas reached 800 career wins. Kalbas remains the winningest active coach in NCAA tennis and just the third all-time to reach 800 wins.
- Freshman Anna Frey has started her collegiate career 13-1 in singles and 8-1 in doubles matches.
- Partners Brantmeier/Hamilton and Kajuru/Maltby earned All-America honors in the fall after reaching the quarterfinals at the NCAA Individual Championships.
- Reese Brantmeier won the 2025 NCAA Singles National Championship and headed into the spring ranked no. 1 in singles.
- Brantmeier earned All-America honors in singles this fall making the senior eight-for-eight in All-America selections across her career.
