Heels Drop Double Overtime Contest To #13 Wake Forest
September 26, 2025 | Field Hockey
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – In the team's first trip to overtime since the 2023 national championship victory, North Carolina field hockey took a 2-1 loss in 2OT to Wake Forest on Friday night.
The Tar Heels (8-1, 2-1 ACC) and the Demon Deacons played a tight, defensive contest with neither team able to score until the final five minutes of regulation. Carolina's Eliza Perrin broke the deadlock at the 55:25 mark when the ball found its way to her in the circle off a deflection. The true freshman slotted home for her third goal of her debut season and UNC looked to have won it.
Wake Forest had their answer with just over a minute remaining in the game. A corner found their leading goal scorer Lauren Storey on the short side and the shot found its way past the Carolina defense.
The first period of extra time was another defensive struggle, with a Charly Bruder breakaway as the clearest chance for either side. It was another penalty corner that cost the Heels in the second period of overtime, as Mia Schoenbeck scored the game winner. Both goals Wake scored came with Carolina a woman down.
It is just the second loss to an ACC side of head coach Erin Matson's young career and the fourth regular season loss. UNC had not lost when scoring first in a contest since Oct. 20, 2023 at Virginia.
The Tar Heels have a chance to bounce back quickly, as they will ship up north to face Boston College on Sunday. The game, which will be the program's first ACC Network appearance of the season, is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. ET.
