Field Hockey Beats BC Late, 2-1
September 28, 2025 | Field Hockey
NEWTON, Mass. – Carolina field hockey ground out a 2-1 road win over Boston College on Sunday afternoon to get back in the win column after their first loss of the season on Friday.
The Tar Heels (9-1, 3-1 ACC) scored twice in the final 10 minutes of the contest to take the win back to Chapel Hill. UNC hadn't lost back-to-back games since the opening weekend of the 2021 season and made sure not to do so today. It was frustrating day on the offensive end for Carolina, who outshot the Eagles 17-7, had six more penalty corners, and forced 11 saves.
It was a cagey first half with some last-ditch defense keeping Carolina off the scoresheet. Charly Bruder was denied on the goal line twice by Boston College defensive saves, both shots had beat the Eagles' keeper only to be slapped away at the last second.
Boston College scored the first goal of the game midway through the third quarter off a cross deflected in by former Tar Heel Melea Weber. It would give the Eagles the advantage until deep in the fourth quarter.
With almost exactly half of the fourth quarter left to play, Ryleigh Heck found herself with the ball on the touchline off a penalty corner. She then shot a pass across the face of goal that, helped on by Dani Mendez, found Isabel Boere at the back post. The true freshman smartly lifted her shot over the BC keeper to tie the game at 1-1.
It was Heck creating once again that earned the game winning goal for the Tar Heels. Taking the ball quickly off a foul, the senior captain found her way back to that same spot on the touchline, but this time she was fouled by Boston College's Laila Rosenquest.
The foul warranted a penalty stroke and up stepped Carolina's go-to spot finisher Sanne Hak. The junior midfielder finished smartly to give the Heels a late lead that they wouldn't relinquish.
The Tar Heels have a lighter week ahead with just one game coming up on the weekend. The team will travel to Norfolk, Va., to take on Old Dominion on Sunday, Oct. 5.
