Arizona Comes From Behind, 10-8, To Stay Alive In Super Regional
June 7, 2025 | Baseball
The Wildcat win forces a decisive game three in the Chapel Hill Super Regional, to be played on Sunday at noon in Chapel Hill on ESPN2.
After Carolina scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to take an 8-6 lead, Arizona responded with four in the bottom of the seventh to retake the lead and win a back-and-forth thriller. Rebounding from Friday's 18-2 defeat, Arizona forced a winner-take-all Sunday matinee with a coveted trip to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., on the line.
Aaron Walton went 3 for 5, Mihalakis was 2 for 5 with three RBI and Tommy Splaine went 2 for 4, homered and drove in two for the Wildcats. Tyson Bass drove in three runs for Carolina and Sam Angelo went 2 for 5 with two RBI.
Arizona had 16 hits, hit 7 for 15 (.467) with two outs and went 10 for 24 (.417) with runners on base. The Tar Heels batted .143 (2 for 14) with runners in scoring position.
The teams traded runs and the lead throughout the contest. Playing as the home team due to NCAA Super Regional rules, the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Adonys Guzman's sacrifice fly drove in Walton.
Carolina replied immediately in the top of the second when Angelo homered to score Bass and give UNC a 2-1 lead. Arizona tied it at 2-all in the bottom of the second on an RBI ground out by Easton Breyfogle.
After a scoreless third frame, each team scored two runs in the fourth. Carolina took a 4-2 lead in the top half of the inning on an RBI double down the right field line by Luke Stevenson and an RBI ground out by Gavin Gallaher. The Wildcats roared right back to tie it at 4-4 in the bottom half of the inning when Splaine hit a solo homer to left and Walton collected his third hit of the game with an RBI single.
Splaine gathered his second hit and second RBI of the afternoon in the bottom of the fifth, driving in Guzman with a two-out single to left that made the score 5-4 Arizona. The Wildcats had 11 hits to UNC's five through the first five innings.
Arizona made it 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth on an unearned run off Haugh. A two-out error by Bass allowed Mason White to reach second base after a single, then Mihalakis' single drove in White.
Trailing by two runs entering the seventh, Bass swung momentum and more than accounted for his error by crushing a 397-foot, three-run homer (11) to right on a 1-2 pitch with two outs, handing the Tar Heels a 7-6 lead. Jackson Van De Brake drove in an insurance run with a based-loaded walk, his fourth of the day, later in the seventh to make the score 8-6.
Arizona refused to go away, however, responding immediately and tying it in the bottom of the seventh when Brendan Summerhill doubled in Andrew Cain to make it 8-7 and Breyfogle scored on a wild pitch by Walker McDuffie to tie it at 8-all. Mihalakis' two-run single gave the Wildcats a 10-8 lead.
Jason DeCaro started on the mound for the Tar Heels and went 3.2 innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs. Aidan Haugh pitched well in relief, striking out six in 2.1 innings. McDuffie (3-2) took the loss, allowing four earned runs and walking three in 0.2 innings.
Carolina drove Arizona starter Raul Garayzar from the game in the second inning, collecting two hits, two earned runs and three walks in 1.0+ innings. Garrett Hicks relieved Garayzar and pitched well for 2.1 innings before giving way to Casey Hintz, who excelled for most of his 3.1 innings before giving up Bass' three-run blast in the seventh. Tony Pluta (3-0) pitched the final, scoreless 2.1 innings for the Wildcats, striking out two and allowing two hits.
