
Tommy Kitchell Wins Shot Put ACC Title On Day Two

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – North Carolina track and field wrapped up day two of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship with one individual championship and two podium finishes.
Tommy Kitchell (20.18m) continued his dominating year with his second ACC title of the season in the shot put. Kitchell won the men's shot put conference title in the since Sal Gigante, who won in 2002. Kitchell won the event on his first throw of the day and continued to improve on it, nearly taking down the ACC meet record with his second throw, giving him his first throw of over 20m as a Tar Heel. He is the first Tar Heel to win the indoor and outdoor title in the shot put since Ian Douglas in 2001.

Sydney Masciarelli (9:57.75) saved her best 3000m steeplechase race of the season for the championship. She clocked a personal best time, which landed her on the podium with a bronze medal. Masciarelli stayed in the top three for the entire race.

Carolina opened its day with two big performances in the decathlon: Max Stakun-Pickering, (7596) and Sam Corley (7595) finished in third and fourth. Stakun-Pickering finished today with two of the top three finishes. The senior closed out the day with a second-place finish in the 1500m (4:36.53). He also snagged a third-place finish in the Pole Vault 4.80m. Corley notched a silver medal in the men's javelin (53.05m) and won the 1500m (4:34.77) ahead of his teammate by two seconds.Â

The Tar Heels punched six tickets to the finals on Saturday in the sprints events. Killian Fahy, 46.27 emerged as the lone Tar Heel to advance to the finals in 400m with a sixth-place finish; Delea Martins (52.88) posted a personal best 400m time while finishing in fifth and is set to compete for the title on Saturday. In the 110m hurdles, all three runners advanced. Kalani Witherspoon (13.38) led the women with a fourth-place finish. Aaliyah Berry (13.39) advanced with a sixth-place finish.Â

On the men's, Blaise Atkinson (13.82) punched his ticket in the 110m hurdles for the finals on Saturday.
Makayla Paige won the 800m prelims, advancing to the finals. The finals will feature three runners from this season's indoor national championships, whom Paige beat in today's race. Roisin Willis from Stanford, Gabriella Grissom  from Miami, and Gladys Chepngetich of Clemson were all a part of the 2025 Indoor National Championship 800m race.
