Carolina Cruises To Win Over Charlotte

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Diamond Heels carried their momentum from the weekend into Tuesday's contest, running away with a 14-4 run-rule victory over Charlotte.
Â
The Tar Heels (29-8, 11-7 ACC) secured their third run-rule in the last four games by recording double-digit hits for the fifth time in the last six games. The team went 4-for-11 at the plate and knocked four RBIs with two-outs.
Â
The 49ers scored three in the first to take an early lead, but Carolina hit right back with four of their own to make sure they ended the inning on top. Luke Stevenson started the scoring with a two-run homer, his 11th of the year that put him back in solo command of the team lead.
Â
Alex Madera got the first of his three hits on the day to add another in the first. He went 3-for-4 on the night with a walk, a run scored and an RBI.
Â
Gavin Gallaher, the reigning ACC Player of the Week, stayed hot and delivered the next big blow for the Tar Heels in the second. With the bases loaded, he smoked one off the top of the center field fence to clear the bags and score three.
Â
The Tar Heels loaded the bases once again in the third and made it count. Tyson Bass singled on a high bouncer over the third baseman before Hunter Stokely drew a walk, each collecting an RBI for their efforts.
Â
The onslaught continued in the sixth with yet another opportunity with the bases juiced. Kane Kepley found the gap in right field to score Madera and Gallaher. Jackson Van De Brake beat the shift up the middle in the next at-bat to add one more to the tally. Van De Brake joined Madera in the three-hit club, pushing his batting average           over the last 10 games to .452.
Â
True freshman Ryan Lynch picked up the win on the mound in a bullpen day for Carolina. He would go the longest of the group at 3.0 IP, racking up five strikeouts while allowing just two hits and one walk.
Â
The flamethrower from Jersey has been one of the most reliable arms all year for the Tar Heels. He is tied for the lead in appearances and has the lowest ERA (2.23) and the most Ks (44) of the regular relievers (at least 10 IP).
Â
Sophomore Folger Boaz finished the game off with 2.2 shutout innings and four punchouts of his own.
Â
Tuesday night was the last of an 11-in-12 game homestand for the Diamond Heels, who won 10 times in that stretch. Next up is a road trip to Blacksburg to face Virginia Tech.
