Diamond Heels Dominate Wake Forest, 17-1, To Secure Series
April 12, 2025 | Baseball
Â
The Tar Heels' (27-8, 10-7 ACC) second run-rule in as many days secured the series over the Demon Deacons. The +26 scoring margin is the largest for Carolina in two straight ACC games since 2008.
Â
It is also the first time the Heels have had 14 or more hits in three straight conference games since April 2022. Including the final two in Friday night's contest, Carolina scored in six straight innings and 11-of-14 overall in the series so far.
Â
On the day, UNC were 14-of-29 (.438) at the plate with two doubles, two homers, 10 walks, and five HBPs. Every starter had either a hit or a run scored.
Â
Wasting no time on getting the party started, captain Jackson Van De Brake smoked his second home run of the season in the first frame after fighting through an eight pitch at-bat. Van De Brake has been on fire of late, hitting .500 with 11 hits and eight RBIs in UNC's last five outings.
Â
His long ball started an avalanche of offense from the Tar Heels that saw them score eight unanswered and 13 total in the first four.
Â
Sophomore Gavin Gallaher led the way throughout, continuing the absolute tear he has been on all week. He finished this game 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. All three hits brought in runs and his lone out, a fly out in the fourth, is his only time not reaching safely so far this series.
Â
He's had at least three hits in three straight contests, matching his total from the first 32 games of the season. He also knocked his fifth home run in as many games. The Apex, N.C., only had three on the year before this stretch.
Â
In just his third start of the season, Carter French impressed once again as a threat in the nine hole. He contributed two hits, two runs, and two RBIs while also adding his second sac bunt of the series.
Â
The sizable lead meant head coach Scott Forbes could give opportunities to some unfamiliar faces in the later stages. True freshman Lee Sowers was one of the beneficiaries, making his collegiate debut and coming away with his first RBI.
Â
Of course, you can't have a 16-run margin of victory without some incredible work on the bump and the Tar Heels got just that from Aidan Haugh. 6.0 innings thrown with only five hits and one run scored while striking out eight adds to his growing tally of quality starts.
Â
He and yesterday's winner Jake Knapp remain the only qualified ACC pitchers with ERAs under 2.00. His 24 strikeouts looking this season is tied for the conference lead.
Â
The Tar Heels will return to Boshamer Stadium once again on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. ET, this time looking to complete a sweep of the Demon Deacons. Coverage of the game will appear on ACCNX.
