February 8, 2025 | Men's Golf
Hampton Roberts set program records for fewest strokes and score to par in a 54-hole tournament, finished second in a playoff and led the University of North Carolina to a runner-up finish Saturday in the Amer Ari Invitational at the North Course at the Mauna Lani Resort on the Kohala Coast in Hawai'i.
Roberts, a sophomore from Cary, shot 67-61-67 for a 21-under-par total of 195. He broke the previous UNC record for fewest strokes in a tournament, which were 197 by Ben Griffin in the Tar Heel Intercollegiate in 2017 and Austin Greaser in the 2024 NCAA Chapel Hill Regional.
Roberts also set the school record for lowest score to par. Griffin, a current member of the PGA Tour, held the previous record for most strokes below par, 19 under in winning the Tar Heel Intercollegiate in 2017.
Roberts shot a school-record-tying 61 on Friday and followed that with a 5-under 67 in the final round today. He had a two-stroke lead but dropped strokes on 16 and 18 to enter a playoff. Texas' Tommy Morrison shot 9-under 63 today to force the playoff, which he won with a birdie on the first extra hole.
The second-place finish is a career-best for Roberts.
The Tar Heels placed second at 59-under-par 805, the second-fewest strokes and second lowest score to par in UNC history. Carolina shot 268-267-270, finishing five strokes behind champion Oklahoma State (262-271-267, 64-under 800).
Texas was third (-56), Auburn was fourth (-53) and Oregon placed fifth (-48).
David Ford and Maxwell Ford both shot 5-under 67s to tie for 16th at 12-under 204. Keaton Vo shot 3 under today to tie for 37th at 8-under 208.
Sihan Sandhu shot a season-best 68 tie for 58th as an individual entry at 5-under 211 and Grant Roscich had a 73 today to finish 4 under.
