How It Happened
- Carolina created a good look 11 minutes into the match when Virginia goalkeeper Victoria Safradin slipped which allowed for a pressing Kate Faasse to continue charging forward, but her shot hit the crossbar and the keeper caught the rebound.
- A foul inside the box prompted a lengthy VAR review in the 18th minute, and the call stood to award the visitors a penalty kick. Maggie Cagle stepped up to the spot and converted her attempt with a shot to the lower left corner for 1-0 UVA lead.
- The home team had a threatening chance in the 25th minute after Bella Sember's low corner kick bounced inside the box, landing straight in the path of Trinity Armstrong, but her header sailed just high.
- Carolina soon found the equalizer in the 30th minute when Maddie Dahlien drove to the end line and sent a cutback pass to Ullmark at about eight yards out. Ullmark's left-footed first touch gave Safradin no time to react as her shot rolled into the lower left.
- The Cavaliers regained a 2-1 lead five minutes later following Yuna McCormack's goal, which was scored after she pressed down the left side and won a 1v1 battle in front of the net.
- The Tar Heels responded once again, leveling the score at 2-2 just three minutes later. Ullmark sent a perfectly-placed pass from the right flank ahead to Faasse in stride who bypassed her defender, sending the ball high off her right boot from the top of the 6-yard box.
- A busy first 45 saw the teams go into halftime with two goals apiece, but UNC held a 9-2 and 3-1 edge in shots and corners, respectively.
- Ullmark found the eventual game-winner in the 74th minute. Tessa Dellarose sent a short pass to Ullmark who dribbled forward down the left side, took a touch of separation from her defender and bent a lethal strike to the back post with her right foot.
- The Cavaliers had an opportunity off a set piece in the game's final seconds. A corner kick in dangerous territory for a header was denied by Gagne, preserving the Tar Heels' 3-2 win.
- Ullmark recorded her first career goal and first career brace. She is the first Tar Heel to record five points in a single contest this season.
- Ullmark also became the third Tar Heel to record a brace this season, joining Faasse (Aug. 18) and Olivia Thomas (Aug. 22).
- Faasse extended her team lead to eight goals and 17 points. She has now scored in four of the last five matches.
- Fresh off U20 World Cup bronze, Dahlien returned to Chapel Hill for her second assist of the year.
- UVA had been averaging 16.9 shots per game, but UNC limited them to just five.
- UVA had also been averaging 7.6 shots on goal per game, and were held to only two.
- UNC finished with 16 shots, including six on frame. UVA had previously been holding its opponents to 7.9 shots per game, and 2.5 shots on goal per game.
- Carolina has now kept all opponents to five shots on goal or fewer, and 15 shots or fewer.
- Six Tar Heels logged a full 90 minutes: Armstrong, Dellarose, Faasse, Clare Gagne, Sember and Ullmark.
