Faasse Gets Second Brace As Women’s Soccer Blanks Louisville, 5-0
October 3, 2024 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Headlined by Kate Faasse's second brace of the season, a monstrous offensive effort with goals from four different players gave No. 3 North Carolina women's soccer a decisive 5-0 shutout over Louisville on Thursday night at Dorrance Field.
Following the win, the Tar Heels – who are No. 1 in the RPI – improve to 12-1 overall and 5-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference action. The Cardinals drop to 6-4-2 (1-3 ACC).
With no ACC losses or draws, Carolina is 5-0 in conference play for the first time since 2020. The team is also undefeated at home with an 8-0 mark and has eight shutouts on the year.
How It Happened
Next, the second-ranked Tar Heels pack their bags and head west for a weekend road trip to California. UNC will take on Cal on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. ET (4 p.m. PT) in Berkeley before playing at Stanford on Oct. 13 at 4 p.m. ET (1 p.m. PT). Both contests will air on ACCNX.

How It Happened
- UNC wasted no time getting on the board, taking an early 1-0 lead in the sixth minute for its quickest goal of the season. Linda Ullmark played a long direct ball into the path of Faasse, who bypassed UofL keeper Kailey Kimball on the right side of the box. Her low shot off her right foot rolled into the lower left corner.
- Carolina made it a 2-0 game with seven minutes left in the opening frame. Bella Sember's free kick from about 25 yards was stopped by Kimball off a bounce before the ball slipped through her gloves. Aven Alvarez was there for the rebound, reacting quickly by getting it in with her right boot.
- Momentum was all in the Tar Heels' favor as they held a 7-2 edge in shots after 45 minutes of play. Both of their shots on target during the first half found the back of the net.
- Faasse got her second brace of the 2024 campaign in the 63rd minute. Maddie Dahlien cut back to Tessa Dellarose who volleyed it forward with her first touch. From the top of the six-yard box, Faasse flicked it in with her right heel to extend the lead to 3-0.
- The score became 4-0 in favor of the home team 11 minutes later, again off a second chance. Sember's low free kick was initially saved by Kimball but became loose, allowing Aria Nagai to tap the ball in with a left-footed first touch.
- UNC's fifth and final goal came in the 84th minute after Asha Means drew a foul inside the box. Stepping up to the spot, Means successfully converted the penalty kick with a shot to the lower left corner.
- The last time the Tar Heels scored five goals was in a 5-0 victory over Gardner-Webb on Aug. 31, 2023.
- Faasse has now scored in five of the last six matches. The junior leads the team with 10 goals and 21 points.
- Faasse becomes the first Tar Heel to have two braces in one season since Ally Sentnor and Avery Patterson both did so in 2022.
- Alvarez and Means both picked up the first goals of their careers. Alvarez is now the fourth freshman to record a point this season.
- Nagai scored her first goal as a Tar Heel. It marked the third goal of the graduate transfer's career.
- Carolina finished with a 19-3 advantage in shots – including 12-1 in the second half – as well as 9-1 in shots on target.
- UNC has kept all opponents to five shots on goal or fewer, and all opponents to 15 shots or fewer.
- A season-high 21 Tar Heels saw game time, led by Emerson Elgin with a full 90 minutes.
- Hannah Johann made her first career appearance between the posts. She logged 12 minutes and made one save.
