Algot Kleen and Matt Ege combined to shoot 11 under par in the second round and East Tennessee State shot 15-under 265 as a team to move into the lead in the second round of the NCAA Chapel Hill Men's Golf Regional Monday at UNC's Finley Golf Club.
The first round of the regional began at 7:30 a.m. Monday and the start of the second round was moved from Tuesday to this afternoon due to the forecast of bad weather over the next two days. The second round began at 2 p.m. with play suspended due to darkness at 8:15 p.m.
Four of the 13 teams and all 10 individuals have holes to play to finish the second round, the resumption of which is scheduled for Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. That includes seven groups of players who have between one and four holes to play.
The third round will not begin any earlier than 9:30 a.m.
ETSU (21-under 539) was three shots behind North Carolina after the first round but surged to a three-stroke advantage over Clemson (-18) and eight over the third-place Tar Heels (-13).
Baylor is fourth at 11 under and Georgia Tech and Long Beach State are tied for fifth at 10 under. The top five teams and the low individual not on one of those teams qualify to play in the 2024 NCAA Championship May 24-29 in Carlsbad, Calif.
Alabama is seventh (-7), Ball State eighth (-2), Loyola Marymount ninth (even), Michigan State 10th (+2), VCU 11th (+4), Northwestern 12th (+11) and Howard 13th (+29).
Clemson's Calahan Keever is the individual leader at 10-under 130 after rounds of 65-65.
North Carolina's Austin Greaser (66-65) and Baylor's Johnny Keefer (67-64) are tied for second at 9-under 131. The afternoon 65 was Greaser's seventh round in the 60s in his last eight NCAA regional rounds.
The Tar Heels teed off in round one at 7:30 a.m. All five Tar Heels shot in the 60s in a round for the first time this season to post 9-under 271 and take a two-shot lead after the opening round.
Monday's first round was the first competitive action at the newly-renovated Finley Golf Club.
The Tar Heels were two strokes clear of Ball State and Georgia Tech, who both shot 7-under 273.
Ball State's Braxton Kuntz set the new course record in round one with an 8-under-par 62. The junior from Winnipeg, Manitoba, made six birdies, an eagle on the par-5 sixth and no bogeys.
Alabama's Canon Claycomb, Baylor's Tyler Isenhart, Clemson's Calahan Keever, Georgia Tech's Hiroshi Tai, Long Beach State's Charlie Forster and Loyola Marymount's Riley Lewis all shot 5-under 65s.
Greaser led UNC with a 4-under 66. Peter Fountain and David Ford shot 68 and Maxwell Ford and Dylan Menante posted 69 for the Tar Heels.
